Public votes on several facilities upgrade options for PdC Schools

With a pair of all day Advisory Task Force meetings on Thursday and Friday of last week at Bluff View, and again on Tuesday night in the high school auditorium, the possible April 2016 referendum for facilities upgrades and exceeding the revenue cap is coming into the decision phase for the Prairie du Chien School District.

Seneca secures Ridge and Valley Conference crown

The Seneca High School volleyball team clinched the conference championship last night, Oct. 13, in front of their home crowd.

Coach Dawn Ray’s Indians defeated La Farge three games to one to secure the Ridge and Valley Conference title outright. The girls now have a 6-0 conference record and are 9-4 overall.

La Farge dropped to 6-3 in conference play, 6-4 overall, and are currently tied with De Soto for second place in the league.

Seneca will travel to Wauzeka-Steuben Thursday night, Oct. 15, to take on the Hornets (5-7) for the final conference match of the regular season.

The Green Bay Packers have announced Aaron Amundson of Prairie du Chien High School has been named the Green Bay Packers High School Football Coach of the Week.

Amundson, who is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Prairie du Chien football program, led the Blackhawks to a 44-43 victory Friday over conference powerhouse Lancaster. The victory marked the program’s first win over the Flying Arrows since 2004 and secured at least a share of the Southwest Wisconsin Conference title, a feat they haven’t achieved since 1988.

Prairie du Chien will now host the 7-1 River Valley Blackhawks for a chance at sole possession of the conference championship.   

“We are blessed to have a great group of seniors who have been playing a lot of varsity ball over the past few years,” said Amundson. “These young men endured some hardships over time and it’s a testament to our players for buying into what we’ve been asking of them over this past year.”

Breast feeding videos downloaded locally lead to Florida woman’s arrest

A Florida piano teacher was arrested last week after authorities discovered she was trying to sell sexual breast-feeding videos.

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Department found out about Leigh Felten, 31, of Tallahassee, when a Crawford County man downloaded several videos and paid for them using a PayPal account.

Felten was arrested on Friday, Oct. 9. The videos displayed Felten breast feeding an infant and rubbing oil on herself and the child and other sexual acts, the sheriff’s department said. According to court documents, the video “was clearly not done for the purpose of education or artistic display. Based on the content, and the fact it is being sold by Felten, it is clear this video is for sexual purposes.”

Stolen work trailer recovered, Highland man arrested

The Prairie du Chien Police Department has recovered a work trailer that was stolen from Prairie du Chien in late August.

On Wednesday, Oct. 7, the police department traveled to Stoughton to follow up on a lead of the previously stolen work trailer, which had about $20,000 worth of construction tools inside when it disappeared.

The two officers who traveled to Stoughton found the trailer parked at a Days Inn. They immediately contacted the Stoughton Police Department and requested their assistance in the investigation. After the Stoughton Police Department arrived, identification of the trailer was made through phone calls and pictures sent to the police department. Upon identification, the trailer was seized and towed to a secure location in Stoughton for further investigation.

On Friday, Oct. 9, officers returned to Stoughton and towed the trailer back to a secure location in Prairie du Chien for further investigation.

Clown storyline sure to torment

The lights might be on in this picture, but imagine these nightmarish clowns in the pitch dark of the Halls of Terror setting on St. Feriole Island. If you dare to experience this year’s haunt, organizers are trying out a themed thrill this time, starring Charlie the former circus clown who has turned the cedar building into an asylum. He and his buddies are ready to frighten you out of your wits and chase you and your friends around the Halls of Terror, which are open Oct. 16-17, 23-24 and 30-31 from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Kid-friendly haunts are Oct. 17 and 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. and Oct. 31 from 2 to 5 p.m. (Photo by Correne Martin)

The terrifying new twists and turns at the Halls of Terror are killer this year! If creepy clowns unnerve you, the 2015 haunt may or may not be for you.

Scheduled for Oct. 16-17, 23-24 and 30-31 from 7 to 10:30 p.m., with kid-friendly opportunities on Oct. 17 and 24 from 6 to 7 p.m. and Oct. 31 from 2 to 5 p.m., Halls of Terror will literally scare you away with its storyline this year.

Charlie, the former circus clown, committed a number of murders, allegedly. On the run from the law, he’s taken asylum in the cedar building on Prairie du Chien’s St. Feriole Island—the site of Halls of Terror for the past four years. Anybody who has entered the building has become his victim.

Those who dare to be scared by this menacing clown and his buddies—also former circus clowns turned lunatics—are certainly in for a disturbing experience.

Motorcyclist dies in crash Sunday

A motorcyclist died as a result of a three-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon, Oct. 11, on the north side of Prairie du Chien, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

At 12:57 p.m., officers responded to a crash on State Highway 35 at Meadow Lane in Prairie du Chien Township. A 2008 Honda sport van, operated by Jason Bland, 36, of Holmen, was stopped in the northbound lane waiting for a vehicle to make a left-hand turn onto Meadow Drive. A 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by Daniel Koch, 34, of Waterloo, Iowa, was also stopped behind the Bland vehicle.

Drivers walk away from city crash

A 2011 Jeep struck in a two-vehicle crash Sunday spun after the collision and ended up on its side. Both drivers in the crash, Peter Mara, of Prairie du Chien, and Dwight Albers, of Postville, Iowa, sustained little to no injuries in the crash. Two area citizens walked away with minimal injuries from a crash at the intersection of South Main Street and West Wisconsin Street in Prairie du Chien Sunday morning, Oct. 11, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

At about 10:30 a.m., a 2011 Jeep, driven by Peter Mara, of Prairie du Chien, was southbound on Main Street and stopped at a stop sign controlling southbound traffic at Wisconsin Street. A 2005 Ford car, driven by Dwight Albers, of Postville, Iowa, was westbound on Wisconsin Street. Mara failed to yield the right of way to Albers, and Albers struck the driver’s side of the Jeep, causing it to spin and roll onto its side.

Both Mara and Albers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Albers was transported to Crossing Rivers Health with minor injuries. Mara had no apparent injuries. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed by Bob’s Towing.

Crawford County Crime Stoppers, which is operated by a volunteer community board of directors, provides a toll-free phone number (866-779-PAYS) for citizens of any age, who may have information concerning a crime, to call. When a call is made to Crime Stoppers, the organization logs the date, time and information provided by the caller. A code number is assigned to that person so the entry can be logged. There is no pressure for the caller to reveal his or her identity; they remain completely anonymous.
