PdC pool to transform into the ‘Big Easy’ July 29

Slide on down to the new “Big Easy” at the Prairie du Chien Aquatic Park on Wednesday, July 29. In conjunction with the Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department, the pool will be hosting a Mardi Gras-themed pool party from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Everyone is invited to come and enjoy activities like the zombie splash contest, bead toss, diving for doubloons, Big Easy slide races and Mississippi River limbo. Live music will be provided by Twisted Vision and southern dogs, voodoo pizza and rajun Cajun popcorn will be available.

Former hospital to be torn down


The former Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital building will no longer exist by the end of the year.

For more than two years, since planning for the new Medical Center began, the old Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital building has been listed for sale with little interest generated. Hospital leadership also sought input and ideas regarding reuse, and contacted several organizations to promote their consideration of utilizing the building.

Operation Troop Aid partners with COTR

Operation Troop Aid (OTA), the esteemed national, non-profit military care package charity, has received an invitation from Country on the River (COTR) to participate in its upcoming August events as the official military charity of choice.

For the fourth consecutive year, OTA will partner with COTR. The three-day country music festival will take place Thursday, Aug. 6, through Saturday, Aug. 8.

As part of the mutual endeavor, OTA and COTR will generate care packages to send to troops overseas. Charitable donations will also be encouraged throughout the duration of the festival.

“We are honored to have Operation Troop Aid join us once again at Country on the River,” said festival organizer, Scott Sheckler. “The support that OTA brings to our troops is invaluable; Country on the River is committed to the Operation Troop Aid mission and we support its efforts fully. We look forward to OTA’s awesome display of patriotism at our event.”

Routine traffic stop leads to meth bust in PdC

On Wednesday, July 15 at approximately 4:20 p.m., the Prairie du Chien Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle that was being operated by a revoked driver.

 
During the traffic stop while the officer was issuing a citation, Crawford County Deputy Joe Breeser and his K9 Breck arrived at the scene. K9 Breck was utilized and indicated to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted.  

As a result of the search, the operator, Quinn A. Echard, 35, Luana, Iowa, was arrested and transported to the Crawford County Jail. Tentative charges include possession of methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine drug paraphernalia.

Citywide revaluation to begin, home visits to commence July 29

The city of Prairie du Chien has contracted with Accurate Appraisal, LLC to conduct a full revaluation of property in the city over the next four years. The purpose of the revaluation is to ensure that properties are assessed on a fair and equitable basis. The goal is to bring assessments to fair market value for the entire city. The last complete physical revaluation of the city took place in 1997. Starting later this month, Accurate Appraisal will begin the process of doing physical inspections of approximately 25 percent of the residential, commercial and industrial properties. Properties will be chosen on a random basis.

Wauzeka-Steuben District Administrator resigns

The Wauzeka-Steuben School Board accepted the resignation of district administrator Michael S. Garrow at its regular meeting Monday night.

Garrow had been district administrator at Wauzeka-Steuben for the past two years.

Garrow will become the new district administrator for the Fall River School District in Fall River.

FEH Associates hired to work possible PdC referendum

FEH Associates Inc. from Dubuque, Iowa, has been selected by the Prairie du Chien Area School Board to lead an extensive study and community process to gather information on possible referendum ideas for both operating and building needs. This process will include community research and surveying. In addition, they will facilitate individual and group meetings that will lead to a community task force. FEH has developed and refined a Charrette process which is a public workshop to work directly with stakeholders on idea development.

FEH is a firm that is more than 100 years old and specializes in working with school districts. They have worked with more than 500 school districts across a nine-state area in the last 30 years. The school board will meet later this month with FEH on contractual details, scope of work, and the timeline.

Special meeting of River Ridge School District July 29

The annual meeting of the River Ridge School District will be held on July 29 at the high school at 8 p.m.

One or more taxes may be voted on at the meeting, including:

A. Tax for sites, buildings and maintenance

B. School Debt Service Fund

C. School Capital Expansion Fund.

The School Capital Expansion Fund projects include: Heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems improvements and enhancements for buildings and sites; buildings and sites renovation, restoration and expansion/addition; buildings and sites structural improvements and enhancements necessary to comply with government regulations and violation notices; secure entrances and other structural security support modalities for buildings and sites; portable-type buildings for sites for the specific purposes of academic and other instruction, office space, and/or support for co-curricular and extracurricular activities and events to include athletics.
