The Bridges of Crawford County

The above photo shows cracking on a bridge on County U in the town of Clayton. Highway Commissioner Dennis Pelock told the county board that the walls of the bridge have moved in an inch. This is not one of the four to be worked on this year, but it is one of 17 that will need to be reconstructed in the coming years and illustrates the problem that the county is facing.

Local entities making joint plans for current hospital facility’s future

The future state of the current Crossing Rivers Health facility (formerly Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital) at 705 East Taylor Street is unknown at this time. But the hospital is banding together with the city, school and local economic development groups to create a plan for promoting economic and community development at that location. The new eight-person Prairie du Chien Common Council decided, Tuesday night, to partner with four other entities, including Crossing Rivers Health, to create a plan to redevelop the current hospital facility at 705 East Taylor Street. The council will join forces with the hospital, the Prairie du Chien and Crawford County economic development corporations, and the Prairie du Chien Area School District in encouraging the hospital facility’s reuse in a manner that promotes economic and community development. If their efforts are unsuccessful, the collaboration may resolve to raze the facility and redevelop the site in a way that would complement the surrounding neighborhood and also encourage economic and community development.

Officers responded to the scene at about 1:20 a.m. Saturday, April 18, to find that a southbound Burlington Northern train had struck Daniel M. Gillitzer, who had been walking east on Blackhawk Avenue. From the initial investigation, officers learned that the train had been traveling at a reduced speed after conducting a crew change about a mile and a half from the scene of the accident.

Gillitzer was transported to Crossing Rivers Health by Tri-State Ambulance and later flown to Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse by Medlink Air, according to the police department.

The incident remains under investigation. Police Chief Chad Abram said he was meeting with Burlington Northern officials Monday morning.

Twelve additional assisted living studio apartments are coming soon to the Bluff Haven complex in Prairie du Chien. The $1.6 million project will be constructed to the east of the existing facility and is anticipated for completion in November or December 2015.

The project is a solution to a need determined by Community Health Services Corporation (CHSC), the non-profit organizatoin which owns senior citizen facilities in Prairie du Chien and Soldiers Grove, based on an increased number of calls looking for these types of services and a growing waiting list that has about 30 names on it now.

“It’s a sign of the demographics of this area. The people are getting older, said Alesha Erdenberger, administrator of Bluff Haven Assisted Living and CHSC senior vice president of operations.

Sex offenders may soon be housed at correctional institution

They won’t work outside PDCCI fence

By Correne Martin

The Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution may soon house sex offenders among its inmates, according to information presented by Warden Tim Haines to the city council Tuesday night.

“A few months back, I was approached by the central office to have us lift the final restriction on the type of inmates housed at PDCCI. We’re at operating capacity right now, so there’s not a bus of sex offenders ready to come in,” Haines explained. “But this provides more flexibility for the Department of Corrections in terms of bed space. For Prairie du Chien, the more we can do for the department, the more viable we are for the department.”

Haines noted that, with this approved lift on limitations, it does not mean that PDCCI is becoming a sex offender treatment facility. “We focus on education, AODA (alcohol and other drug abuse) programming, domestic violence treatment and cognitive error correction.”
