Veterans services could be reduced across Wisconsin

County veterans service office assistance for veterans and their dependents could be cut back if recently introduced Wisconsin legislation (AB 821 and SB 668) passes. The legislation would remove some of the locally-offered benefits, such as driver’s license and park pass eligibility determinations, from the county office and offer them through a consortium office shared with a nearby county or at an office in Madison, thus requiring veterans to travel farther to receive those services or utilize email or fax to send documents to the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs.

“They’re not taking into consideration that our local veterans don’t want to or can’t drive to Madison for these services. They might not know how to use email or send faxes,” Crawford County Veterans Service Officer Laura Moore stated. “If they just come into our office, I can look at their ID and verify their information much quicker and make it easier for them.”

St. Patrick’s parade puts a spring in everyone’s step

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade always draws a good crowd along Blackhawk Avenue in downtown Prairie du Chien.

As usual, a large turnout is expected for the annual Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 12.

Parade participants are asked to assemble at 9 a.m. on St. Feriole Island and the parade will begin at approximately 10 a.m.

“Just as robins are a welcome harbinger of spring, the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a sure indication that the seasons are ready to change and we can start to say farewell to winter,” said City Administrator Aaron Kramer. “It is a real positive for the city and especially the downtown, and the chamber does a real nice job putting it all together and drawing visitors from all around the area.”

The parade will start from St. Feriole Island and proceed east on Blackhawk Avenue, north on Michigan Street, west on Washington Street and then back to St. Feriole Island.

Opportunity Center services at stake again, citizens asked to voice opinions

Services like those offered at the Opportunity Center in Prairie du Chien are again at stake, as the Wisconsin Department of Health Services is drafting a new Family Care 2.0 Concept Plan, due to the Joint Finance Committee by April 1. Through a provision in the plan, states could make determinations that may or may not discontinue facility-based prevocational services like the Opportunity Center’s.

If the JFC approves the concept plan, DHS will draft and submit a waiver request to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services by the end of September. This will likely leave few opportunities for individuals with disabilities and their family members to voice their choice, according to A Team Wisconsin.

“The government is pushing for MCOs (managed care organizations) to kick employees out of the center,” said Kari Kossman, Opportunity Center community services coordinator.

Elite Painting of Prairie du Chien has been hired by Crawford County to repaint the courthouse ceiling which has been peeling and dropping paint since the $2.081 million courthouse renovation project was completed in November of 2013.

Area woman charged with marijuana possession

A 28-year-old Soldiers Grove woman has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession with intent to deliver marijuana.

Cheyenne A. Raymond faces up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a sheriff’s department deputy performed a routine traffic stop on a vehicle in Soldiers Grove and noticed an odor of burned marijuana.

A search of the vehicle revealed a plastic baggie containing marijuana, a glass smoking device, a digital scale, and a box of 150 sandwich baggies.

Raymond admitted to the deputy that she had travelled to La Crosse and purchased a pound of marijuana from two individuals, the complaint said. Raymond told the deputy that she had used some of the marijuana herself and had also sold some to other individuals, according to the complaint.

Eastman man removed from residence

On Monday, Feb. 23, at approximately 6:20 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report from a third party of a requested welfare check at 106 N. Main St. in the village of Eastman.

Deputies arrived on scene and made contact with two individuals inside of the residence. It was requested that Pierre D. Gardner, 31, Eastman, be removed from the residence due to safety concerns. Deputies attempted to speak with Gardner about where he could stay for the night or if they could assist him to anywhere.

Gardner became verbally aggressive and started to threaten deputies. Gardner then started to yell at the other individual in the residence and became loud and aggressive. Gardner would not listen to deputies’ commands to calm down. The other individual was advised to go outside of the residence. At this time, Gardner chased the other individual outside of the residence and ignored commands from deputies to stop.

Gays Mills man charged with hitting men with bat

A 32-year-old Gays Mills man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of substantial battery.

Tyler J. Babb faces up to 3.5 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Babb hit two men with a baseball bat at a residence in the town of Marietta on Jan. 24. Babb hit one man in the head and the other in the right arm, the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Babb admitted to officers that he had gone to the residence to confront a man with regard to an incident that had allegedly occurred about four nights earlier between the man and Babb’s estranged girlfriend.

Two separate incidents result in meth possession charges

A 39-year-old Prairie du Chien man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine.

Christopher A. Fernette faces up to 15 years in prison and a $50,000 fine if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a sheriff’s department deputy saw Fernette pull into the driveway of a residence of an individual known by the deputy to be involved in controlled substances.

Fernette later drove the vehicle to a parking lot of a store. The deputy then deployed his K-9 on the vehicle while Fernette was in the store, and the dog “hit” on several locations on the vehicle, the complaint said.
