Peoples State Bank expands presence in Grant County

Peoples State Bank announced last week that it has entered into an agreement to purchase FirstMerit Bank’s Lancaster, Fennimore, Dickeyville, and Potosi branches. The transaction involves the sale of the buildings, loans, and deposits associated with the branches. Pending regulatory approval, it is expected that the sale will close in July.

Mark Forsythe, president of Peoples State Bank, said the acquisition is consistent with the bank’s plan for growth.

“We really appreciate the opportunity to work with FirstMerit Bank on this acquisition and are extremely excited about increasing our bank’s presence in Grant County,” Forsythe added. “Our bank’s history of service in southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa is a great story and we are anxious to begin meeting and working with the farmers, businesses and residents of Lancaster, Fennimore, Dickeyville, and Potosi to write another chapter.”

PdC High School Class of 2016 val and sal named

Jessica Gutknecht, valedictorian, and Autumn Kohler, salutatorian

Jessica Gutknecht has been named the valedictorian and Autumn Kohler the salutatorian of the Prairie du Chien High School Class of 2016.

Jessica Gutknecht is the daughter of Rick and Joy Gutknecht. She’s grown up in Prairie du Chien and has been an active part of the community. She is a member of St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church and president of the youth council there. Throughout high school, she has been a varsity athlete in gymnastics, golf, and soccer. She’s also participated in Key Club, Science Club, National Honor Society, and a musical production.

After the completion of her senior year, Jessica will have taken seven Advanced Placement classes including calculus AB, calculus BC, statistics, English language, English literature, U.S. history, and music theory. Additionally, she’s taken two Project Lead the Way (PLTW) classes: intro to engineering and design, and civil engineering and architecture.

Welcome to Prairie du Chien Prairie du Chien

Mayor Dave Hemmer (right) welcomed Prairie du Chien’s newest business, Solomon Corporation, to the North Gateway Business Park on Tuesday, April 12, following a ribbon cutting at the industrial facility. Tom Hemmer, company president and CEO, said “Prairie feels like home for us. We operate in several small towns and the people and culture here are exactly what we wanted.” Tom’s dad, Gene Hemmer, founded Solomon Corp. 45 years ago in Solomon, Kan. In addition to Kansas and now Wisconsin, the company has regional locations in Colorado, Texas and Tennessee. In total, Solomon has 560 employees, including 16 who started April 7 in Prairie du Chien. The local employees were hired as mechanical and electrical technician work, dismantlement and materials handling, receiving as well as paint and finish work. At least another eight employees are anticipated, as 24 is the number Solomon committed to with respect to incentives it received from the state of Wisconsin.

Test drive a Ford to benefit PdC High School, PdC K9 unit

Blackhawk Motors in Prairie du Chien is hosting two unique opportunities for people interested in test driving a brand new Ford vehicle and, at the same time, raising money for Prairie du Chien High School and the Prairie du Chien Police Department’s forthcoming K9 unit.

First, on Monday, April 18, from 3 to 8 p.m., in the Prairie du Chien High School parking lot, drivers age 18 and older are invited to stop by and spend some time behind the wheel of a Ford vehicle as part of the Ford Drive 4 UR School. For every valid test drive taken, Ford will donate $20 to the school district, up to $6,000. The goal is to raise the maximum amount. The donation from Ford will go into the high school’s general fund and dispersed as determined by the school.

About 10 vehicles will be on site for test driving, including an Edge, Focus, Fusion, Escape, F-150, Mustang, etc.

Garage and shed from Hwy. 18 moved to Mt. Hope, house will be torn down

Drivers who were out and about in Bridgeport Sunday morning may have found themselves behind a slow-moving, oversized load being hauled by Heritage Movers to its business in rural Mt. Hope.

The garage and shed, previously owned by Von and Jean Denlinger and located at 38374 Highway 18 on the east side of the highway, was moved around 7:30 a.m. to Heritage Movers’ property at 12527 Garthwaite Lane, Mt. Hope.

“It took us two hours and 15 minutes to go 18 miles,” third-generation Heritage Movers Owner Russell Childs said. “We had four state patrol cars escort us.”

Flags and banners bring color to the downtown

American and British flags from the 1800s and banners once created for a local art contest fly in downtown Prairie du Chien to add some color and additional interest to the area.

Visitors to downtown Prairie du Chien recently may have noticed some additions on the light poles overhead. American and British flags from yesteryear fly on one side of many of the poles, while banners of various artwork are afixed to the other side of the poles as well.

The flags, according to local historian Mary Antoine, represent those that flew over Ft. Crawford (American) and Ft. McKay (British) during the War of 1812. The ones displayed downtown currently were leftover from when Prairie du Chien celebrated the bicentennial anniversary of the War of 1812, she said.

The banners, which were originally created as part of a local art contest sponsored by the former PDRI, were located collecting dust in storage by Chris Mara, past president of PdC Main Street, and Mike Ulrich, parks and recreation director.

Following the passage of the Prairie du Chien School District referendum, the school board met Wednesday night, April 6 to get a jump on how to proceed with the facilities upgrades for all three school buildings.

Prairie du Chien man arrested on two counts of burglary from storage units

A rural Prairie du Chien man was arrested last week on two counts of burglary from storage units in Prairie du Chien Township, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

During the month of February, the sheriff’s department received two separate reports of burglarized storage units located on County K in the township. Entry was forcefully gained into the units by cutting the padlocks. Once entry was gained, several miscellaneous items of value were stolen from within. They included power tools, hand tools, fishing equipment and household items, with an estimated value in the thousands of dollars.

The sheriff’s department continued to actively investigate the burglaries. On Monday, April 4, the sheriff’s department initiated contact with Christopher Caya, 38, a suspect in the burglaries. Caya was ultimately arrested on the two counts of burglary.
