Elaine K. Hanson

Elaine K. Hanson, 79, of Flint, Mich., died Saturday, June 27, 2020, at Fostrian Court Assisted Living in Flushing, Mich., of natural causes.

She was born Dec. 14, 1940, the daughter of Albert Christian Frederick and Mildred Maxine (Pardee) Fisher of Garnavillo. Elaine graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1958, and from Iowa State University in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.

Leanna W. Burns

Leanna Walke Burns, 74, of Littleton, Colo., and formerly of Guttenberg passed away unexpectedly on June 16, 2020.

A celebration of life service was held in Littleton, Colo., on June 27.

Leanna was born April 2, 1946, to Harvey and Veronica (Frommelt) Walke in Guttenberg.

Lockmaster House closed for repairs

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is repairing its lockmaster house at Lock and Dam 10 in Guttenberg. The Corps now leases the house to the Guttenberg Heritage Society to operate as the Lockmaster House Heritage Museum. The house is closed to the public and visitors during the rehabilitative work.

Corps officials awarded a contract to Aegean Construction Supply Corporation, from Shalimar, Fla., to complete the rehabilitative work. The contractors started work on the project in May and hope to finish by the end of fall.

Local couple paints Pioneer Rock Church

The "Pioneer Rock Church," or "Ceres Church," named by local residents, is centrally located between Guttenberg and Garnavillo along Highway 52. The historic landmark was formerly known as "St. Peter's German United Evangelical Lutheran Church." 

The church has a history that dates back to 1858, when residents of Ceres, formerly known as Independence, grew tired of their weekly journey by foot to attend services in Garnavillo.

City to enforce ban on fireworks displays

With many July Fourth community celebrations cancelled due to COVID 19, Iowa retailers have noticed an increase in  the purchase of fireworks by individuals. 

Guttenberg Police Chief George Morteo reminds residents that the department will be enforcing the city's ban on the use of consumer display fireworks.

As the saying goes – everyone has a story. Pastor Penny Hansel, now retired, is putting the finishing touches on her autobiography, Handstands on the Beach. The adventuresome, age-defying woman has worn many hats throughout the years and has never shied away from a challenge. Hansel commented, "I am retired for the fourth and final time!"

Allen Real Estate Company of Monona has recently expanded its business with the purchase of Rightway Realty in Guttenberg. Nathan Trappe, real estate broker for Allen Real Estate, told The Press, "The late Gary Willman's father started Rightway Realty back in 1958. Gary eventually took over the business and made it into the successful brokerage firm it is today."

Superintendent gives update on plans

The following statement was issued last week by Clayton Ridge School Superintendent Shane Wahls:

"I want to update the public regarding the re-opening of school facilities and activities. Currently, baseball and softball seasons are underway with several guidelines to offer safety for players, coaches, and fans.
