McElroy grants schools broadcasting equipment

Clayton Ridge Middle and High School students will soon be broadcasting live from their classrooms thanks to a grant from the McElroy Foundation via Keystone Area Education Agency. Instructors Cheri Werges, Mindy Reimer, and Nicole Shaw worked on grant applications to provide both campuses with equipment including a videocamera, interview microphone kit, sound mixer, teleprompter, floodlights, green screen, and all the associated cables.

Fern M. Pensel

Fern Marie Pensel passed away Nov. 23, 2015, at the Guttenberg Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 6, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg.

Fern was born March 31, 1945, to Roberto and Anna (Lamphier) Hines in rural Strawberry Point. She graduated from American School. She married Carl Pensel on July 18, 1964, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg.

Downtown assessment visit planned for Dec. 1-2-3

A three-day visit by a team from the Iowa Downtown Resource Center is underway in Guttenberg. 

The visit began Dec. 1 and will conclude Thursday, Dec. 3, with a final public presentation from 12 noon to 1:30 p.m. in the city council chambers at the Guttenberg Municipal Building. The presentation will also be taped and live on Channel 6 so those who are working but cannot attend can benefit from the suggestions and ideas.

Public invited to meet and greet city officials at Dec. 7 reception

The public is invited to a "meet and greet" of the outgoing, newly-elected and re-appointed members of the Guttenberg city council, park board and hospital board on Monday, Dec. 7, from 5-6 p.m. in the dining room of the Guttenberg Municipal Building. A swearing-in ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Outgoing city officials to be honored include council member Virginia Saeugling, park board member Austin Greve and hospital trustees Mary Eulberg and Penny Hansel.

Creativity Center launches membership campaign

Corps extends navigation season due to warm weather

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is extending the navigation season on the Upper Mississippi River a few extra days due to the continued warmer weather.

The Corps is now scheduled to close Lock and Dam 9, near Lynxville, Wis., for winter maintenance Dec. 9 at 10 a.m. The lock was originally scheduled to close Dec. 7.

The team will complete an on-site study of Guttenberg's downtown district, including a public presentation. A written report will follow that will assist in future planning efforts.

New lockmaster settles in at Lock and Dam 10

Lock and Dam #10 has a new lockmaster for the first time in well over a decade. When lockmaster Marvin Althoff retired after roughly 15 years, Sam Mathiowetz was hired as his replacement. Mathiowetz comes to Guttenberg from Lock and Dam #1 in Minneapolis, Minn., where he was hired in 2008 as an equipment repair site mechanic.
