Visitation was Friday, Jan. 22, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Saturday, Jan. 23, at the funeral home.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Lorita E. Hefel

Lorita E. (Bailey) Hefel, 73 of Greeley, died Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation was Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Reiff Funeral Home in Epworth.

There will be no public services.

Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in North Buena Vista at a later date.

Free counseling offered for new existing local businesses

Steven Horman, a professional business consultant, specializing in one-on-one business counseling and long-range strategic planning for business, government and non-profit organizations, will be in Elkader to provide free and confidential one-on-one business counseling to existing business owners or to those wishing to start a business on Friday, Jan. 29, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Clayton County Economic Development  Group office, 200 E. Bridge St., Elkader.

Brown's 2nd chili cook-off Jan. 30

Brown’s Sales & Leasing in Guttenberg will hold their second annual chili cook-off on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the music programs at Clayton Ridge and St. Mary’s schools, and Brown’s will match funds raised by the cook-off.

Crow recounts time spent as missionary in Africa

Former Guttenberg resident Janis Crow spent time in Guttenberg recently between trips to Pemba, Mozambique, where she gathered with 300 students from 30 nations worldwide through Iris Global Ministry. 

Crow grew up in West Branch and found herself in Guttenberg last year after praying and fasting for four days. There she met Cheryll Shireman, owner of the Riverside Grind coffee shop, who asked her to start work there the next day. “I worked there for three months and got to meet many beautiful people,” Crow told The Press.

Marvin Edwin Vaske, 79, of Garnavillo, died Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.

Visitation was Thursday, Jan. 14, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Friday, Jan. 15, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Interment was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo.

E. H. "Skip" Hall

E. H. "Skip" Hall, 79, of Guttenberg, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 7, 2016.

Memorial services were Sunday, Jan. 17, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Skip was born in Independence on Dec. 21, 1936. He graduated high school from Independence Schools and was a member of the Navy CB from 1955-1959.

Skip married Marcia Sherrets on May 7, 1971, and they lived the majority of their life together in Guttenberg.

Gregory L. Dubbels

Gregory Lee Dubbels, 62, of Paducah, Ky., died Monday, Dec. 21, 2015 at Lourdes Hospital.

A memorial service will be held at Southside Holiness at a later date. Milner and Orr Funeral Home of Paducah is in charge of arrangements.

Greg was born in Cedar Rapids on Jan. 24, 1953, to the late Kermit J. and Beverly (McKinney) Dubbels. He had worked in the barge industry his entire life, most recently as a pilot for James Marine. Greg was a member of Southside Holiness.

Guttenberg Eagle Watch set for Feb. 13

Plans are underway for the 2016 Eagle Watch and Cabin Fever Day in Guttenberg, organized by Guttenberg Development and Tourism and held at the Marina Visitor's Center.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 13, and will include a presentation by a new organization, Raptor Advocacy, Rehabilitation, and Education (RARE). Luke Hart, formerly of MacBride Raptor Center, is expected to bring several live birds of prey for the event.
