Vet's Field will see new concession stand this fall


The concession stand at Vet’s Field in Guttenberg no longer serves its purpose for the youth league games played at the field. It will be replaced with volunteer labor in October. (Press photo by Molly Moser)

In 1997, a used concession stand was pulled north from Dyersville to Veteran’s Field in Guttenberg. After almost two decades of use, the structure is in disrepair and no longer meets food safety standards – so a group of local volunteers have decided to take action.

Bruce Moser

Bruce Moser, 66 of Guttenberg, passed away on Sept. 7, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospital of a sudden illness surrounded by his family.

Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 11, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

A private family inurnment will be at a later date.

Bruce was born on Sept. 5, 1950, in Guttenberg, the son of Clyde and Fern (Wachendorf) Moser.

Vernon Lee Cherne, 72, of Guttenberg, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, at his residence.

Visitation was Monday, Sept. 5, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept. 6, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries.

Interment was at St, Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Marguerite Sylvia Berns, 99, of Guttenberg, died Friday, Sept. 9, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 12, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at St. Mary's Cemetery, Guttenberg.

Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg, was in charge of arrangements.

Jacob Richard Hagen, 23, passed away on Aug. 18, 2016, at home after losing a hard fought battle with addiction.

A celebration of life was held on Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home, Clifton Park, N.Y.

Visitation was Thursday, Sept. 8, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Funeral services were Friday, Sept. 9 at the funeral home.

Burial was in the Clayton Cemetery.

Matthew A. Gentz

Matthew Allan Gentz, 35, of Guttenberg, went home to be with the Lord, Sept. 6, 2016, at the University of Iowa Hospital.

Private gravesite services will be Saturday, Sept. 17, at 11:00 a.m. at the Edgewood Cemetery.

A celebration of life is being planned at Grace Evangelical Free Church in Elkader at a later date.

Being Mortal discussion Sept. 13

A panel discussion on Dr. Atul Gawande’s book, Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine and What Happens in the End, will be held on  Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 6-8 p.m. at the Eagle Ridge Independent and Assisted Living meeting room, 1329 Acre Street. Food will be provided.

The panel will consist of Dr. Andrew Smith, Pastor Penny Hansel, Nancy Heitman, BSN and Stephens Minister, Julie Fagner of Crossing Rivers Hospice, and Dr. Dan Mansfield, surgeon at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

School bus/motorcycle fatality on Great River Road Sept. 1

An accident involving a Clayton Ridge school bus and a motorcycle on the Great River Road north of Guttenberg on Thursday, Sept. 1, claimed the life of the motorcyclist, Ronald John Kephart, 50, of Garnavillo.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred as Kephart was travelling  south on the Great River Road on a 2010 Kawasaki and struck a school bus driven by Charlotte Scherer of Guttenberg that was turning west onto Lace Avenue from the Great River Road.

Clayton County Supervisors approve Pattison zoning request
