Dean Meyer passed away peacefully on June 29, 2015, at the Guttenberg Care Center. 

Visitation was Thursday, July 2, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Friday, July 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church Garnavillo, conducted by Rev. Gary Hatcher.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery.

Carson Delane Beckett Sr., 72, of Elkport, died Friday, June 26, 2015, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Visitation was Sunday, June 28, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo and one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, June 29, at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Michael Jackson.

Interment was at Garnavillo Community Cemetery, Garnavillo.

Arnetha R. Marting

Arnetha Rose Marting, 87, of Garnavillo, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2015, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Arrangements were handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Garnavillo. All services were private.

Arnetha was born on Aug. 17, 1927, in Delhi, the daughter of Ross and Hazel (Smock) Morley.

Womenade potluck is July 14

A Womenade potluck will be held Tuesday, July 14, starting at 6:00 p.m. in the south pavilion in the park near the south Marina Visitor Center in Guttenberg. In case of rain or fish flies, the potluck will be moved to the visitor center.

Everyone is invited to bring a dish to share and to come and enjoy an evening of fellowship. Updates will be given regarding donations received and the distribution of those contributions.

The group is looking for more county-wide participation. Those attending are encouraged to bring a friend or neighbor.

River of Music returns this Friday

Guttenberg’s River of Music, a free summer concert series for residents and guests,  will return after a July Fourth holiday hiatus on Friday, July 10, when the Guttenberg German Band takes the stage from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

The German Band has become reknown for its authentic German play list of polkas and other traditional melodies. The band was formed in 1986 to play for a polka mass, and then became the centerpiece entertainment for the community's Germanfest celebration for the past 25 years.

Acupuncturist joins Guttenberg's Riverside Wellness Center

We learn as students that blood flows through our veins and arteries from our hearts all the way to the tiniest capillaries in our fingertips, and we learn that hormones travel through our bodies activating necessary processes. We learn that electrical impulses sent by nerves running from our feet to our brains will notify us of a pebble underfoot or a pain in the stomach.

Free concert and percussion workshop on July 14

In addition to the New Orleans salute, Songs of Hope will present a wide variety of songs from all the countries of all the performers on stage. Their songs will range from U.S. rock ‘n roll to Turkish pop to Vietnamese and Bulgarian traditional songs. (Photo submitted)

Songs of Hope, a six-week, overnight performing arts summer camp in Saint Paul, Minn., for youth 10 years and older from around the world, returns to Guttenberg next week during their annual post-camp musical tour.

Stars and Stripes Celebration July 3

Stars and Stripes Celebration organizers have planned a full day of entertainment for this Friday, July 3. Community members and visitors can expect a parade, fireworks, food, and children’s games. 

Community members and business owners are also encouraged to decorate their windows with red, white, and blue, contributing to the spirit of the Stars and Stripes Celebration, and to purchase honor ribbons for their loved ones lost and veterans of all wars.

County clock tower gets a facelift

The wooden clock tower that chimes above the Clayton County Courthouse is undergoing a complex restoration organizers hope will be complete by 2017. In April, Clayton County Historic Preservation Commission (CCHPC) applied for a second Historic Resource Development Project (HRDP) grant which, if received, will provide funding for beginning phase two of the clock tower repair scheduled for this summer.

Webster and Merrick to be honored in parade

Neil Webster, 94, of Guttenberg, was selected by the Stars and Stripes committee as this year’s Super Senior. Neil will be featured in the Stars and Stripes parade, which begins at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 3.
