Local veterans honored in D.C.

Garnavillo veteran Glenn Berns, 75, and Guttenberg veteran Floyd Westhoff, 82, traveled to Washington, D.C. on Oct. 18 as members of the Honor Flight. The nonprofit, which has 127 hubs in 41 states, is dedicated to providing veterans with honor and closure by allowing them to visit, for free, their memorials in Washington, D.C.

Veterans Day program is Nov. 11 at CR school gymnasium

The public is invited to honor military veterans on Friday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Clayton Ridge High School gym in Guttenberg.

The program will open with a color guard  made up of members of the local American Legion, Amvets and VFW posts. Clay-Gar American Legion Post of Garnavillo will present a POW/MIA ceremony. The pledge of allegiance will be led by the first place state winner of the fifth grade essay contest.

Hattie Eva Appleton, 103, of Guttenberg, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, at her home.

Visitation was before services at the funeral home.

Funeral services were Friday, Oct. 28, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, conducted by Rev. Penny Hansel.

Interment was at Guttenberg City Cemetery.

Joann A. Hoth

Joann Alice Hoth, 85, of Elkader, died Thursday, Oct. 20, 2016, at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital.

Visitation was one hour before services at the church.

Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 24, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, conducted by Rev. Bruce Hanson.

Interment was at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Hoffmann marks 25 years of sideline medicine

“With Doc on our sidelines, he takes care of our students  no matter what their illness or injury is. He has helped to make sure I could do my job by volunteering countless hours to take care of our students' health while they’re participating in football, and has served our community in a way that I am sure we will be forever in debt,” said head Clayton Ridge Football Coach Chad Harbaugh.

For 25 years, Dr. Jeff Hoffmann has been pacing the sidelines at football games in Guttenberg.

Robert Glenn Bolsinger, 82, of Colesburg, died peacefully Oct. 22, 2016, at his home in Colesburg, surrounded by his loving family.

Visitation was before services at the church.

Funeral services were Wednesday Oct. 26, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Edgewood, conducted by Rev. John Haugen. Lectors were Les Simons and Leo Roling. Eucharistic Minister was Carol Simons. Placing of the pall was done by Jeffery Bolsinger, Dawn Martin and Jennifer Hambright. Giftbearers were Mellyssa Smith and Steve Smith.
