Community comes together for local musician

Eleven years ago, beloved Guttenberg musician Scott Fischer was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. He had the cancer removed and continued singing, playing guitar, and performing alongside his bandmates – but on Aug. 8 of this year, Fischer and his family were told the cancer had returned.

School PPEL vote set for Tuesday

Note: On Tuesday, Dec. 6, voters in the Clayton Ridge Community School District will go to the polls to vote on a measure regarding a physical plant and equipment levy. The proposal is for a 10-year levy not to exceed $1.34 per $1,000 of assessed valuation on taxable property in the district. This represents an increase of 67-cents from the current levy. 

There will be three voting sites:  Guttenberg Municipal Building, the Garnavillo Community Center and the parish hall in North Buena Vista.  Polling hours are 12 noon to 8 p.m.

Wallace M. Felland

Wallace Maynard Felland, 97, passed away at the Guttenberg Care Center, Guttenberg on Nov. 25, 2016.

A family funeral is planned at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg on Nov. 28. A burial service of his cremains at the Oakland Cemetery in Forest City will be scheduled at a later date.

Wally was the youngest child of Gunder K. and Martha (Fjeld) Felland. He was born on March 7, 1919, in a log cabin on his grandfather’s farm in Worth County. He was baptized at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church in Joice. He attended country school and the Forest City High School.

Dennis Saeugling

Dennis Saeugling, 98, of Iowa City, died Nov. 18, 2016, at Briarwood Health Care Center surrounded by his family.

Funeral services were Wednesday, Nov. 30, at Saint Thomas More Catholic Church. Family will greet friends before services.

Dennis was born Nov. 30, 1917, in Guttenberg to Henry and Christina Saeugling. He and his twin brother, Dean, were the youngest of ten children.

Nancy E. Bruce Ball

Nancy Earl Ball died on Tuesday evening, Nov. 22, 2016, at Christus Trinity Mother Frances Hospital, Tyler, Texas, after a brief illness.

Visitation was Saturday, Nov. 26, at Jackson’s Burks-Walker-Tippit Funeral Home, Tyler. 

Graveside services were Monday, Nov. 28, at Fairview Cemetery, Chetopa, Kans.

Willard W. Morarend, 91, recently residing at Guttenberg Care Center, formerly of Dubuque, passed away Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016. 

Friends may greet the family from 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, at Hoffmann Schneider Funeral Home, Dubuque. 

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Guttenberg, where friends may greet the family from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Norma Lou Kuempel

Norma Lou Kuempel of Guttenberg passed away Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, at the Hiawatha Care Center in Hiawatha.

Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 19, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Guttenberg, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries. Visitation was before services at the church.

Interment was at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Guttenberg, followed by a luncheon at the Guttenberg Municipal Building.

Holiday Train coming Dec. 4

On Sunday, Dec. 4, the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will make a stop in Guttenberg at 12:45 p.m. There will be live music, and Santa will be aboard the decorated train to greet the public.

The train is also expected to make a stop in Marquette that same day at 2:45 p.m.

Late night for CR school board

The Clayton Ridge School Board of Directors met in regular session on Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. Members in attendance were John Heying, Christine Aulwes, Michael Finnegan, Alicia Helle, Ellen Johnson, Jason Reimer and Kathy Ihde. 

FFA students attending the National FFA Convention reported on their recent trip to Indianapolis.

PLC members and administration reported on a PLC Institute they had recently attended in Des Moines.

No new restrictions placed on rezoned properties

Once again, a meeting on the topic of rezoning 700 acres of land along Great River Road from agricultural to heavy industrial drew dozens of stakeholders to a meeting at the Clayton County office building. It was standing room only on Tuesday, Nov. 15, while the Zoning Board of Adjustments conducted a public hearing as the final step in a year-long process of research, discussion, and controversy.
