River expedition to raise funds for ShelterBox disaster relief

A Florida man stopped in Guttenberg last week during a trip down the Mississippi River on a personal journey to raise funds and awareness for disaster relief.

Erik Elsea is solo-paddling the entire length of the river to raise money for ShelterBox USA. Elsea, former president of the Cape Coral Rotary Club, arrived in time to speak with Guttenberg Rotary members at their weekly Thursday meeting on Aug. 9.

Roland Emory Hansel, 75, or you may have known him as Gano, Boise, Sonny or Uncle, of Guttenberg passed away Monday, July 30, 2018, at his farm on Miners Creek.

Visitation was Monday, Aug. 6, at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg. Funeral services followed the visitation at the funeral home, conducted by Rev. Gary Hatcher.

Services were held Saturday, Aug. 4, at Grace World Outreach Church.

Burial was in the Spring Lake Cemetery, Brooksville, Fla.

Richard Loren Andregg, 92, of Guttenberg, died Saturday, July 21, 2018, at the Guttenberg Care Center.

Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 10, from 10-11 a.m., at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Guttenberg. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. following the visitation at the church, conducted by Rev. Marvin Bries and Deacon James Pfaffly.

Arrangements are being handled by Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home, Guttenberg.

Municipal pool closing ceremony set for Sunday evening, Aug. 19

The Guttenberg Municipal Swimming Pool will close with a splash on Sunday evening, Aug. 19, when the public is invited to a special closing ceremony to bid farewell to the aging structure prior to the start of the new pool construction.

Two counselors who specialize in addictions recently visited Clayton County to spread the word about the connection between teen gaming and problem gambling.

Mary Boots, I.A.D.C., B.A., and Genevieve Balajadia, M.A.,  work out of the Substance Abuse Services Center in Dubuque and serve a 10-county area that includes Clayton County.

A recent noon hour on a beautiful summer day found members of Guttenberg Rotary Club heading to the Big Springs park area for a true "working lunch." The park, located in the city limits along the Great River Road, has been a Rotary project for several years.

October 16, 1925 to July 28, 2018

On Saturday, July 28, 2018, Rev. J. Richard Parler, 92, entered heaven’s gates and met his Savior face to face. Mr. Parler, a long-time resident of Wadena, known simply as Pastor to many, was born October 16, 1925, near Cameron, South Carolina, to Paul Jefferson and Mary (Kemmerlin) Parler. Upon graduation from high school in St. Matthews, South Carolina, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served aboard the USS Wasp during WWII. Shortly after his return from the Pacific, Mr. Parler met Sybil Maree Edmonds, whom he married on June 9, 1947. In spite of his aunt’s dire prediction that, “it will never last,” they remained a picture of abiding love until her death in September, 2013.
