Cowboy’s Arena holds bull riding on Saturday nights

Cowboys, cowgirls and spectators have been having a great time in recent years at bull riding events at the Cowboy’s Arena near Seneca. The bull rides are held every Saturday night beginning at 7:30 p.m. from September through May.

Evelyn Marie Sutton

Evelyn Marie Sutton, 89, of Seneca Township, died Monday, Jan. 26, at Crossing Rivers Health Center, Prairie du Chien. 

She was born on May 9, 1925 to Lorenzo H. and Iona (Benhart) Sutton in Seneca Township. She attended Dean School in Seneca Township. Evelyn completed a course to be a CNA years after attending Dean School.

Elmer A Moon

Elmer A Moon, 90, of Prairie du Chien passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, at the Nazareth Health and Rehabilitation Center in Stoughton. 

He was born June 25, 1924 in Bagley, the son of Leo and Emma (Meng) Moon. Elmer served in the US Navy during WWII. He married Eleanor Martin on April 9, 1949 in Prairie du Chien. She preceded him in death on Dec. 5, 2006 after 57 years of marriage. Elmer worked for Design Homes in Prairie du Chien for many years until his retirement.

Community invited to ‘Shoot for a Cure’ games in support of Carl Shedivy

During his bone marrow transplant, Carl Shedivy, a Prairie du Chien native, received new stem cells, which flowed through an IV into his body. Everything went according to plan during his November transplant, but he still has a long road ahead of him. The Prairie du Chien High School boys and girls basketball teams are gearing up to Shoot for a Cure on Saturday, Jan. 31 and create greater leukemia awareness in honor of one of Prairie du Chien’s own, Carl Shedivy.

Shedivy, a 1979 graduate of Prairie du Chien and a member of the school’s all-athlete Hall of Fame, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in July of 2014. He lives in La Crosse with his wife Denise (Schauff, also a Prairie du Chien native), and works as an engineer for Trane. He has received a bone marrow transplant and is working toward recovery.

“He’s at day 68. We’re hoping he can make it to day 100,” stated his sister-in-law Paula Shedivy, girls basketball coach and PdC teacher. “He is making some strides. He’s really hoping to make the games on the 31st.”

Train strikes car, no injuries

This 1999 Honda Civic, driven by Kathryn Banasik, 65, La Crosse, was only minimally damaged after being clipped by a moving Burlington Northern Santa Fe train Wednesday evening, Jan. 21, in Prairie du Chien.

A La Crosse driver and her passenger safely escaped her vehicle before it was struck by a train in Prairie du Chien Wednesday evening, Jan. 21, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

At 5:37 p.m., Officer Tony Berg responded to the East Blackhawk Avenue intersection with the railroad tracks to find a 1999 Honda Civic that had been struck by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train. The driver, Kathryn Banasik, 65, and her male passenger had exited the vehicle prior to the collision.

According to the Prairie du Chien Police Department, Banasik was driving eastbound on Blackhawk Avenue when she realized she was operating her car without headlights. She attempted to pull to the side of the roadway to turn on the lights but mistakenly drove off the road’s surface onto the tracks. A northbound BNSF train then hit the vehicle, causing minimal damage to the driver’s side front end.

Eagles Telethon achieves 40 years, looks to exceed $750,000 this year

The Eagles Heart and Cancer Telethon will reach a major milestone on Saturday, Jan. 31. Not only will this be the 40th year of the community celebration in support of heart and cancer research, but it will also be the year in which donations exceed $750,000. That’s three-quarters of a million dollars!

The 2015 talent show, live auction and eight-hour spectacle will begin at 5 p.m. at Bluff View Intermediate School in Prairie du Chien and last until 1 a.m. Up to 15 raffles and live auction items will include a 2014-15 mens’ Wisconsin Badger basketball, signed by all the players and coaches; a 2014-15 Packer football signed by the team; a Robin Yount signed print; a Corey Hart signed print accompanied by two Brewers club seat tickets.

Travis W. Baughman

Travis W. Baughman, 45, passed away Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born Feb. 23, 1969 in San Jose, Calif., the son of Conrad and Marian (Ivancovich) Baughman. Travis currently worked as a contractor with his father for Baughman Construction. He was a talented artist and enjoyed painting, tile work and making household items including furniture.
