Prairie du Chien Country Club hosted the Prairie du Chien Quadrangular boys’ golf meet Tuesday afternoon. 

Cuba City won the meet with a team total of 196. Prairie du Chien had 213, Fennimore 231, and Richland Center 233.

Citywide cleanup is next week

Next week, the city of Prairie du Chien will once again provide its citywide residential spring cleanup. Pickup dates will be as follows: Blackhawk Avenue North, Monday, April 20; Blackhawk Avenue South (east of Marquette Road), Tuesday, April 21; Blackhawk Avenue South (west of Marquette Road), Wednesday, April 22.

Please place your items out on the curb on the appropriate days, as there will be no return trips. The street crews will pick up brush, appliances and metal recyclables. Town and Country Sanitation will take the remaining items on Saturday, April 25. With questions, call 326-2525.

A list of guidelines for this cleanup follows:

Appliances—Must have doors and locks removed. Appliances and brush must be curbside in the front or alley to the rear of the residence.

Electronics—None will be accepted. Electronic devices must be disposed of at the clean sweep/e-waste collection event, at a future date to be announced.

Sex offenders may soon be housed at correctional institution

The Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution may soon house sex offenders among its inmates, according to information presented by Warden Tim Haines to the city council Tuesday night.

“A few months back, I was approached by the central office to have us lift the final restriction on the type of inmates housed at PDCCI. We’re at operating capacity right now, so there’s not a bus of sex offenders ready to come in,” Haines explained. “But this provides more flexibility for the Department of Corrections in terms of bed space. For Prairie du Chien, the more we can do for the department, the more viable we are for the department.”

Haines noted that, with this approved lift on limitations, it does not mean that PDCCI is becoming a sex offender treatment facility. “We focus on education, AODA (alcohol and other drug abuse) programming, domestic violence treatment and cognitive error correction.”

It’s Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week

All cities and villages in Crawford County that have outdoor sirens will be testing them at these times. In the case of severe storms, the drill will postponed until Friday.

That’s why Wisconsin Emergency Management (WEM), ReadyWisconsin, the National Weather Service (NWS) and the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association (WBA) have teamed up for Wisconsin’s Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week from April 13-17.

Crash takes life of Soldiers Grove man

A 19-year-old Soldiers Grove man was killed and three other teens  injured in a two-vehicle crash near Readstown early Sunday morning, according to the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the sheriff’s office, Preston D. Nelson, 19, of rural Soldier’s Grove, was driving east around 1:20 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Hwy. 14 when he lost control of his truck. Nelson crossed the center line, made contact with another eastbound vehicle, entered the left ditch and rolled multiple times. Nelson was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Garage sale signs should comply with city regulations

This garage sale sign on the corner of Dousman and Blackhawk is in compliance with the city’s sign placement regulations because it sits away from the roadway and out of the boulevard. It is also less than 3 feet in height and less than 3 feet in square size.

Citywide garage sales are this weekend in Prairie du Chien. In anticipation of the large number of sales expected, city officials are reminding the community to follow some simple sign placement rules and regulations.

First, signs must be placed at least 15 feet away from the edge of a road surface.

“Basically, don’t put it in the boulevard between the sidewalk and the road. That’s a pretty common mistake people make,” Prairie du Chien Police Chief Chad Abram said. “People also like to affix their signs to telephone poles, street signs and trees. That’s illegal, especially if it’s in the right of way.”

Second, signs cannot be posted on city property. They should also not be placed on private property, without consent from the owner. “People need to get permission if they’re going to put a sign in someone’s yard,” Abram said.
