Local RadioShack franchise unaffected by the corporation’s Chapter 11 filing

A recent announcement by RadioShack Corporation regarding reorganizing the company through a Chapter 11 filing may have the public wondering about the status of the Prairie du Chien RadioShack. But, according to Owners Roger and Marlene Dyer, there is nothing to worry about locally.

RadioShack Corporation represents only the company-owned stores. These company-owned stores are mostly located in larger regional and metropolitan population areas, such as La Crosse and Madison. These types of stores are the only ones that may be affected by the Chapter 11 filing.

New equipment donated for Hoffman Hall pool in memory of local man

Six new benches made of recyclables now grace the pool deck at Hoffman Hall, thanks to a generous donation in memory of the late Jim Coorough, who passed away last August. A basketball hoop and volleyball nets for the pool were also purchased with the donation, and the remainder of the $6,000 gift has been added to the Hoffman Hall Improvement Fund. The state-of-the-art pool at Hoffman Hall recently received a few new additions, thanks to a donation in memory of the late Jim Coorough, a native of Prairie du Chien, an Army veteran and a retired Wolf Machine Shop machinist. Jim and his wife, Pat, have been active members of Hoffman Hall for years. After his passing in August 2014, Pat and the Coorough children contributed a memorial of almost $6,000 so that six benches, a basketball hoop and volleyball nets could be purchased for use in the pool area. A portion of the gift has been placed in the Hoffman Hall Improvement Fund as well.

“The pool was more or less our entertainment,” Pat stated. “We came nearly every day. We met a lot of good friends.”

Prairie du Chien woman pursuing her dream in Nashville

Prairie du Chien native Chellanie (Adams) Grunwald has been pursuing her dream in country music for a decade.

Since she was a little girl growing up in Prairie du Chien, Chellanie (Adams) Grunwald has wanted to become a singer. These days, she’s paying her dues in the country music capital of the world and, after 10 years there, is pleased with her progress. She’s songwriting frequently, playing clubs and honky tonks in Nashville regularly, is recording a new album and is continuing to work her way up in the music business.

“There are so many musicians and everybody is fabulous,” Chellanie said. “It’s very hard sometimes, hence the day job, but it’s a dream and you have to work at it.”

After graduating from Prairie du Chien High School in 2000 and UW-Platteville in 2005, Chellanie moved to Nashville, where she integrated herself by waiting tables during the day and singing at night. Now, she spends her days working as a loan processor in the mortgage business. Then, she plays live one or two times per week at songwriters’ nights.

David J. Redman

David J. Redman, 65, of Prairie du Chien passed away in his sleep Thursday, Feb. 5, at home.

He was born May 1, 1949 the son of Mearl and Esther (Mindham) Redman. He married Mary Ann Morgan on Aug. 3, 1968 at St John’s Church in Patch Grove. Dave was well known in the area as a beer salesman and deliveryman. He worked for Prairie Beer Distributing in Prairie du Chien for over 30 years. He was an avid hunter and belonged to the Prairie Rod and Gun Club. Dave was very proud of his recent baptism into the catholic faith and his membership at St. John’s Parish.

Judy L. (Nugent) Kay

Judy L. (Nugent) Kay, 68, of Atlantic, Iowa, passed away Sunday, Feb. 1, at her residence in Atlantic.

Judy was born Oct. 10, 1946, in Atlantic, Iowa, to Gerald and Betty (Okerlin) Kay. She grew up in Atlantic and graduated from Atlantic High School. Judy attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and received her Master’s in Psychology from the University of Colorado. She was a school psychologist for the Prairie du Chien, school district for 27 years. She also was a school psychologist for the Atlantic schools for 10 years.

Accident causes injury and road blockage

On Saturday, Jan. 31, at 11:09 a.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of a two-vehicle accident with injury and with blockage in Bridgeport Township on Highway 18 at Selch Drive.

A 2006 Chevrolet owned and operated by Loretta Weipert, 42, Farmersburg, Iowa, was southbound on Highway 18.

Weipert made a left turn into the path of a northbound 2008 Toyota owned and operated by Barbara Stofflet, 66, Boscobel.

Both Weipert and Stofflet declined medical transport.

Both vehicles had heavy front end damage.

Weipert was cited for failure to yield.

The Sheriff’s Department was assisted by the Prairie du Chien Police Department, the Prairie du Chien/Bridgeport First Responders and Fire, Tri State Ambulance and Bob’s Towing.

Vehicle totaled in crash

On Sunday, Feb. 1, at 1:55 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a one-vehicle crash in Wauzeka Township on Highway 131 approximately 1,000 feet north of Skunk Road.

A 2002 Dodge pickup operated by Jeramiah Huber, 18, Steuben, was negotiating a curve when the truck left the west side of the road.

The truck came to rest on its side against some trees.

Huber was not injured. The vehicle was a total loss. Weather was a factor.

The truck was removed by Terry’s Tire & Tow.

County thefts investigated

On Friday, Jan. 30, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department investigated a theft from a machine shed located on County B near Pine Knob Road in the township of Utica. Stolen from the shed; 14/2 outdoor electrical wire, 12/2 indoor electrical wire, and an aluminum radiator for a Dodge truck.

The sheriff’s department is also investigating the theft of an LED Solar Powered Stop Sign. The stop sign was located on County S approximately one tenth of a mile west of North Halls Branch Road in the township of Seneca. The sign was stolen sometime during the night hours of Sunday, Jan. 25 and the early morning hours of Monday, Jan. 26.

Pickup truck strikes school bus

On Feb. 3 at 8:18 a.m., Clayton County deputies responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 18 and Falcon Avenue outside of Monona. According to the initial reporting party, an MFL MarMac school bus was westbound on Highway 18 and struck a pickup truck that was crossing Highway 18 on Falcon Avenue leaving the Kwik Star parking lot. An additional reporting party, the driver of the school bus, reported that there were 53 children, a driver, and one monitor on the bus and that there were no reported injuries.

Upon investigation, it was determined that a juvenile driver of the pickup truck failed to yield upon entering a through highway and was cited for the offense. One child from the school bus was transported to Crossing Rivers Health for further examination.
