Tornadoes likely spawned from storm

Clean-up continued Tuesday after a line of powerful thunderstorms with strong winds and hail moved through Wisconsin Monday morning. As of 10 a.m. Tuesday, there were 3,600 customers without power statewide, down from 54,000 at the height of the storm, according to Wisconsin Emergency Management. In Crawford County, one mobile home was destroyed in rural Wauzeka. Another home lost part of the roof and is not inhabitable at this time. Flood water damaged Bob & Lou’s Bar and Grill in Steuben as well. Pictured above, two-inch hail was reported in Steuben, and nearly a mile of trees were wiped out on a hillside on Plum Creek Road, in rural Wauzeka. Below, power poles were snapped at their base along Highway 27 between Eastman and Prairie du Chien. In neighboring Grant County, an estimated 20 homes along with 30 agricultural buildings were destroyed or severely damaged primarily around Cassville, Lancaster, Platteville, and Hazel Green. An additional 300 homes had moderate to minor damage. At this time, emergency declarations have been issued for Cassville, Lancaster, Platteville and Grant County. The National Weather Service of La Crosse reported Tuesday that Monday mornings storms may have also brought along several tornadoes. It said the bulk of the damage in southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa came from strong straight line winds from what’s called a bow echo, named because the shape of the storm on radar resembles a bowling line.

NWS La Crosse Meteorologist Andrew Just said, “Occasionally these bow echoes can produce very brief tornadoes along them.” He noted that there may have been one in Crawford County, based on radar data. “We have not been able to completely verify [this]; we are working with emergency management,” he added.

The NWS planned to survey the damage and conclude its report on Wednesday.

Community feels impact of teen gone too soon

Bridget Achenbach passed away from injuries she sustained in a car crash on May 24. The 19 year old left quite a joyful legacy and impacted many community members in her time.

“The little town with a big heart” lost a small piece of it May 24 when one of its own, Bridget Achenbach, died in a car crash just a few miles from her rural Eastman home. Those who knew her will remember her as someone who accomplished more in her short 19 years than some do in a much longer lifetime.

Area man hunts, films for new Wild TV show

Jordan Mulrooney, a Mount Hope native and current Bagley resident, is one of the pro staff featured on the “Wicked Tine Outdoors” show online and new to Wild TV beginning July 3.

Starting July 3, some 19 million people will be able to watch a new hunting show, “Wicked Tine Outdoors,” featuring Mount Hope native and Bagley resident Jordan Mulrooney, on Wild TV-Canada’s Hunting and Fishing TV Network. The formerly Internet-based show captures the full story about what hunting is truly about for blue-collar Americans like Mulrooney who juggle family, friends and work along with their passion to get out into the woods.

“Every one of us has a job, juggles kids around and rushes out of work to get to their tree stand,” said Mulrooney, who’s married with one young son. “We make hunting fun to watch. We enjoy being out there and we joke around but we also have some really awesome videography and first-hand footage.”

Charles E. Shinko

Charles E. Shinko, 74, of Platteville and formerly of Eastman passed away Monday, June 14, at Manor Care in Platteville.

He was born Jan. 20, 1941 in Prairie du Chien, the son of Thomas and Lola Mae (Bright). He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a welder for American Motors in Janesville.

Sabrina C. Langmeier

Sabrina C. Langmeier, 58, of Patch Grove, went to Heaven on Sunday, June 21, at home surrounded by her loving family.

Sabrina was born June 15, 1957, in Mesa, Ariz. to Casimiro “Cas” and Dorothy (Christ) Hurtado. On April 4, 1981, she married James G. Langmeier at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. As a loving wife to Jim and beloved mother of three sons, Joseph, Michael, and Keith, family was her heart and joy. Farming with her family brought her much happiness. Sabrina was a patient and kind friend to all. A woman of strong faith, Sabrina was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed watching the Milwaukee Brewers and a good fish on the end of her line.

Three inches in an hour

Numerous streets in Prairie du Chien were flooded Monday morning after a reported 3 inches of rain fell between 7:30 and 8:30 a.m. They were Marquette Road as well as Dousman, Webster, Fillmore and Fremont Streets, among others. Motorists are pictured making their way through deep water on Dousman Street. In addition to the rain that inundated the area, severe weather passing through included hail measuring as large as 2 inches in diameter (in Steuben), wind gusts as high as 60-plus miles per hour, mud slides, debris on roadways, downed power lines and trees, inoperable stop lights and more. Emergency crews stopped traffic due to hazardous traveling conditions in various locations across the region. Drama camp is for all kids, from the dramatic to the shy

Looking for a uniquely entertaining and educational activity for your kids to experience this summer? Consider enrolling them in the week-long Drama Hawks Junior Camps at Hoffman Hall, sponsored by the Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department. There are two sessions that meet June 29 through July 3; 5-8 year olds are from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and the 9-12 year olds meet from noon to 3 p.m. Practices are Monday through Friday with a final performance planned for Friday evening at the Prairie du Chien High School theater.
