Ferryville man charged in marijuana case

A 57-year-old Ferryville man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of possession of marijuana—second and subsequent offense, and one count of possession of a firearm by a felon.

Arnold Jay Harris faces up to $35,000 in fines and 13.5 years in prison if convicted of both counts.

According to the criminal complaint, a traffic stop was initiated on the Harris vehicle in the town of Utica in Crawford County when the Crawford County Sheriff’s deputy noticed a live, growing marijuana plant in the back seat.

Seized in the subsequent search were three live marijuana plants in planting pots, a bottle of plant starter liquid fertilizer, a .22 caliber pistol and ammunition, a plastic baggie containing marijuana and a glass marijuana pipe, the complaint said.

Man charged with abusing patient

A 23-year-old La Crosse man has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of intentionally abusing patients—bodily harm.

Kenneth R. Mackenzie faces up to a $10,000 fine and six years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, a client of Lori Knapp Companies reported to staff members at Lori Knapp and at the Opportunity Center that he had been hit with a rod by Mackenzie, an employee of Lori Knapp.

Several bruises were observed to the clients’ legs and his eyes were black and blue and swollen. Bruises were also observed on the clients’ back as well as an open wound on his knee, the complaint said.

Woman charged with delivering drugs to inmate

A 19-year-old West Bend woman has been charged in Crawford County Circuit Court with one count of delivering illegal articles to an inmate.

Crystal Ashley Schwartz faces up to a $10,000 fine and 3.5 years in prison if convicted.

According to the criminal complaint, Schwartz admitted to investigators that she delivered a balloon containing drugs on two separate occasions to her father, who is an inmate at Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution. The balloons contained cocaine, according to the complaint.

Grant applications due Oct. 1 for Crawford County Community Fund

The Crawford County Community Fund is now accepting grant applications for its annual grant cycle. The application deadline is Thursday, Oct. 1. Applications must be completed online and submitted online no later than midnight on that day. Mailed, emailed or faxed copies of applications and incomplete or late applications will not be accepted or considered.

The grant review committee of the Crawford County Community Fund Advisory Board is chaired by Tarasa Lown. In making the grant application announcement, Lown noted, “For the 2015-2016 year there is up to $5,500 available for grants for charitable economic development projects within our Crawford County community. We know that there are many great ideas-in-waiting that can increase economic vitality and improve the quality of life in our region; we are prepared to review those ideas and make awards.”

Engraving plate found, but mystery remains

Facedown between some bricks, Kathy Hammill, of Prairie du Chien, found this engraving plate. “The plate seems to display members of a group, possibly military,” observed Hammill. She said that she found the plate on her property, which once belonged to William Picha. Hammill commented that this was only one of the many treasures that has been found, yet this piece has captivated her. Second St. Feriole Island beach clean-up to be held Aug. 2

The second event to help clean up the St. Feriole Island’s Mississippi River beach will be held on Sunday, Aug. 2, from 9 a.m. to noon. This event was the brainchild of a group led by Desiree Stephenson, of Prairie du Chien.

At their last event, held on Sunday, July 12, the group was able to remove quite a bit of garbage from the beach, but there is still more to go.

Stephenson suggests that people who come should bring a rake, gloves, garbage bags (particularly recyclable ones), water, sunscreen and proper shoes. She added that there will be a first aid kit on-hand in case of injury.

Relay for Life to be held this weekend

Prairie du Chien’s Great River Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1, from 5 to 10 p.m.

In the past, the Great River Relay for Life has brought in over a million dollars for cancer research. “We’ve raised $1,036,051.82 to be exact,” said Mary Ann Heisz, former event co-chair. While Heisz is no longer a chair of the event, she remains synonymous with the Relay.

In the Relay’s first year, 2000, Prairie du Chien was ranked as first in the state for funds raised in its class, garnering over $82,000. The following year, Prairie du Chien achieved a national ranking of 10th, raising $115,236.

Looking back, Heisz said that she was proud of the support for the Prairie du Chien Relay. “The community is just so great. It’s such an inspiration. The money we raise is great, the physical support...now that means so much more.”

Heisz noted that the most important thing for the Relay to have is good community involvement.

Czajkowski Higgins named PdC’s official city attorney

With Tom Peterson’s retirement as the city attorney for Prairie du Chien, Lara Czajkowski Higgins was announced as one of two new city attorneys.

Czajkowski Higgins is a native of rural Wauzeka and attended St. John’s Catholic School, as well as Wauzeka High School, graduating in 1993. Afterward, she attended Grinnell College in Iowa, receiving her bachelors of arts degree in political science in 1997.

Following her undergraduate education, Czajkowski Higgins moved to Washington, D.C., and worked for a year before returning to school, this time at Villanova University School of Law, to receive her juris doctor in 2001.

In order to address the public’s concerns and questions regarding the razing of the old Prairie du Chien Memorial Hospital building, the Courier Press reached out to Crossing Rivers Health. Sasha Dull, the chief development officer and external relations coordinator, Bill Sexton, the chief executive officer and Charlie Connell, Crossing Rivers Health board president, agreed to sit down to help put the confusion to rest.

“It’s sad to see it come down,” began Sexton. “But the alternative is to watch it decay over time and we didn’t want that to be the hospital’s legacy.”

The building, according to Sexton, served the community for about six decades until the hospital officially moved to its new home in June. “We’ve had the property listed for two years, and in that time, there was no viable plan presented for it,” stated Sexton.

Prairie du Chien team competes in World Bowfishing Tournament

The Prairie du Chien team included Drake Coleman, Ben LaHaie and Aaron LaHaie.

A team of Prairie du Chien bowfishermen competed in the World Bowfishing Tournament held in Prairie du Chien on July 26-27. Cabela’s was a host and the weigh-in was held on their property.

The tournament took place from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. All of the fish that were brought in were taken to a local pig farm as feed. Tournament organizers contact local entities wherever they hold their tournaments and the fish have gone to raptor rehabilitation centers, to organic farms as fertilizer, and more.
