City’s concentration on flood mitigation continues

The city of Prairie du Chien continues its efforts to address flood and flash flood conditions on the east side of the community.

A contract with Gerke Excavating, of Tomah, has been approved to remove silt from Nommenson pond this fall. The pond affects water south of the Godden Pit watershed at the intersection of 22nd Street and Campion Boulevard, according to City Administrator Aaron Kramer. During its regular meeting Tuesday night, the common council voted to move forward with the $18,000 project, with about $8,000 in funds coming from excess money in the 2014-2016 capital projects fund and the remaining $10,000 coming from reallocated funds previously earmarked for the Old Rock School.

Restorative justice benefits community

Prairie du Chien Police Chief Chad Abram (second from left) and Detective Stacy Polodna (left) visited the Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution on April 29 to present to the Restorative Justice Class and receive a donation for the K-9 unit. They spoke to about 45 inmates and several staff about their perspectives on how crime affects the community as a whole, individual crime victims and themselves as police officers. Their message was well received by all who attended. Prior to the officers’ visit, PDCI staff led two fundraisers in which both staff and inmates participated, raising a total of $925.27. The money was donated to the K-9 unit for the purchase and training of the city’s new drug dog. Historical society members to celebrate 20th anniversary

The Prairie du Chien Historical Society plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the society during its membership picnic on Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Fort Crawford Museum.

In the 1980s a small group of people began to discuss the formation of a historical society to preserve and interpret the rich and varied history of Prairie du Chien. While there was the interest in the formation of an organization, the question always was where to have a museum to display objects and present programs. The community had always supported the Villa Louis and the Museum of Medical Progress, but neither interpreted the history of Prairie du Chien. Then, in 1994, the State Medical Society of Wisconsin offered an opportunity.

Helen L. Stade, 95, died Friday, Aug. 5. Visitation will be Thursday, Aug. 11, from 4 to 7 p.m. with a 4 p.m. Rosary at Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, McGregor, Iowa and one hour before Mass at the church on Friday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 12, at St. Mary Catholic Church, McGregor, Iowa. Burial will follow at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, McGregor, Iowa.

Lorenzo “Louie” Sutton Jr.

 Lorenzo “Louie” Sutton Jr., 81, of Prairie du Chien, died Friday, Aug. 5, at Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. 

He was born Jan. 26, 1935 to Lorenzo Harold and Iona (Benhart) Sutton in Prairie du Chien. Lorenzo graduated from Seneca High School in 1952. He entered into the United States Marine Corp, served in the Korean War and was honorably discharged.

Woman reported missing at Wyalusing Beach

A woman who reportedly took an early morning swim went missing at the Wyalusing Beach in Wyalusing Township Wednesday morning, Aug. 3, according to official rescue personnel on scene Wednesday. The woman, who has since been identified as Virginia Aberle, 29, of Chicago, Ill, went missing from her group of friends that were camping at the beach around 3 a.m. Information was received that she was apparently in the water when she went missing.

In anticipation of a possible drowning, dragging operations on the river started immediately by the Grant County Search and Rescue Team as well as various rescue volunteers from the surrounding communities.

By Thursday, the Grant County Sheriff's Department reported that Aberle was presumed drowned and a recovery effort was put in place. Recovery was suspended overnight Wednesday but continued into Thursday and Friday, Sheriff Nate Dreckman said.

Sheryl L. Morey

Sheryl L. Morey, 47, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Aug. 2, at her home. 

She was born Aug. 20, 1968 in Oelwein, the daughter of Larry and Peggy (Meyer) Morey. She married Mike Gould on Sept. 21, 1991. Sheryl had worked in management for Proctor and Gamble for many years and had recently moved to the Prairie du Chien area from Iowa City.
