Becky Nagel logs onto the Go Wild website on the new computer at the Crawford County Clerks Office in the Administrative Offices Building in Prairie du Chien. The customer and the license issuer can see the computer at the same time. In addition to the County Clerks Office and more than 1,000 vendors statewide, customers can also use their home computer to purchase hunting, fishing and conservation patron’s licenses.

New youth pastor comes to Faith Evangelical Free

The Faith Evangelical Free Church in Prairie du Chien welcomed a new student ministries/worship pastor, Ryan Thompson, at the end of February. Bringing with him a lifetime of service and commitment to the Lord, Thompson believes he’s following God’s calling to serve locally.

Faith Evangelical Free last had a youth pastor in 2012.

“We’ve been praying since then that God would send us the right person,” Pastor Mike Jacobson said. “We wanted to pay off our church debt (and did in July 2015) and that allowed us to be more aggressive in our search. Ryan’s really been able to hit the ground running for us.”

Patients in the Prairie du Chien area who need vision and dental services can now receive their care in a new location.

The 8,000-square-foot clinic, located at 118 South Marquette Rd. (U.S. Highway 18/35), opened March 21 and combines Gundersen’s dental and eye services into one convenient location.

“The new clinic will benefit patients and our community by offering more access to high-quality eye care in a more comfortable and private setting,” said Philip Holzer, OD, optometrist at Gundersen Eye Clinic Prairie du Chien.

The clinic features a larger waiting area, additional exam rooms and designated rooms for specialized testing.

Walker’s Cabinet on the Road comes to Prairie du Chien

Many of Gov. Scott Walker’s appointed cabinet secretaries visited Prairie du Chien Monday, March 21, as part of Walker’s Cabinet on the Road initiative.

Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch was in Prairie du Chien to announce a new facility and WEDC funding for Solomon Corp. of Solomon, Kan. The company, which sells electrical transformers, is projected to add 24 jobs. Ironically, the Solomon ceremony was interrupted, and another Prairie du Chien appearance by Department of Workforce Development Secretary Ray Allen at 3M was canceled, because of a power outage.

Secretary of Transportation Mark Gottlieb was in Prairie du Chien for a freight railroad talk session with Wisconsin and Southern Railroad and area businesses. He also spoke at an “It Can Wait” don’t text and drive event at Prairie du Chien High School, sponsored by the American Automobile Association and AT&T.

Public meeting held soon for Highway 27, Prairie du Chien to Eastman

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will hold a public involvement meeting to discuss proposed improvements for Highway 27 between Prairie du Chien and Eastman. The meeting is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6 at the Eastman Village Hall, 112 Shanghai Rd.

The project will involve reconstruction and rehabilitation of 10 miles of Highway 27 between Cipra Road in the town of Prairie du Chien and Water Street in the village of Eastman. Several horizontal curves in the rural portion will be reconstructed to current standards; the alignment of the remainder of the roadway will generally follow the existing alignment. Side road intersections, driveway entrances, culverts and storm sewer will be replaced.

Construction is currently scheduled for 2018.

Former PdC doctor gifts $40k to animal shelter

Dr. Marilu Bintz has gifted Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter $40,000 toward its efforts to build a shelter for the Prairie du Chien area.

“This donation will certainly bring our goal of an animal shelter much closer to reality,” stated Bev Pozega, RABAS volunteer.

Dr. Bintz shared the reason for her generosity toward the organization. “In the 26 years that I have spent practicing here, Prairie du Chien and the surrounding communities were very good to me,” she said. “This is one way I can try to say thank you.”

Dr. Bintz’s donation, coupled with two other anonymous donations totaling $25,000, received in the same week, brings RABAS’ total to over $330,000.

Rivers and Bluffs Animal Shelter will be constructed on two acres of land, donated by Steve and Lynda Welter, at the intersection of East Campion Boulevard and 22nd Street.

The group is beginning its ninth year of fundraising.

Bobbie J. Ostrander

Bobbie J. Ostrander, 87, of Eastman passed away Thursday, March 24, at the Good Neighbor Home in Manchester, Iowa.

He was born July 15, 1928 in Lynxville, the son of John and Estella (Huard) Ostrander. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Carolyn Bailey on Oct. 1, 1955 in Prairie du Chien. Bobbie worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 58 years until his retirement. He was a member of the Fisher- Lechnir- Wall Post 252 of Eastman. In his spare time Bobbie loved to fish.
