Randi Louise Harris, 65 of Postville, died Monday, April 11, at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, Iowa after a brief illness. 

Randi was born on Feb. 2, 1951 to Leo Roger and Lillian Irene (Monson) Harris in Postville. She graduated from Postville High school, attended the University of Northern Iowa and received her nursing degree at Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, Iowa.

Antoinette Marie “Toni” Otto (Panka), 94, of Sun City West, Ariz. passed away, Friday, April 1, in the comfort of her home.

Toni, daughter of Peter and Antoinette (Schoeffer) Panka was born on March 23, 1922, raised, and attended school in Prairie du Chien and graduated from College of Saint Teresa with a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Deborah J. Brown, 63, of Prairie du Chien passed away Monday, April 11, at her home following an extended illness. 

She was born Aug. 18, 1952 in La Crosse, the daughter of Charles and Ruby (Anderson) Knudson. She married Ricky Brown on July 2, 1991 in South Tahoe City, Calif. Debbie worked as a medical transcriptionist for healthcare facilities in Oklahoma City, Davenport, LaCrosse, Prairie du Chien and Chippewa Falls. She enjoyed traveling and making her home in the country. She was a pet lover, especially her cats.

Viroqua edges PdC girls in eight

Viroqua edged host Prairie du Chien 10-8 in 8 innings nonconference softball action Thursday afternoon.

Viroqua scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Prairie answered with 3 in the bottom half to take a 3-1 lead.

The Lady Hawks scored another run in the second to increase the margin to 4-1.

Shirley M. Greene

Shirley M. Greene, 80, of Janesville, died Sunday, April 10, at Huntington Place. 

She was born on Nov. 29, 1935 in Eastman, the daughter of John and Carrie (Stluka) Osthoff. Shirley enjoyed playing the coronet in the band at Seneca High School, from which she graduated in 1953. She was employed at GMAD, retiring in 2003. After her retirement, she enjoyed spending many happy times with her grandchildren.

Prairie du Chien man arrested on two counts of burglary from storage units

A rural Prairie du Chien man was arrested last week on two counts of burglary from storage units in Prairie du Chien Township, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

During the month of February, the sheriff’s department received two separate reports of burglarized storage units located on County K in the township. Entry was forcefully gained into the units by cutting the padlocks. Once entry was gained, several miscellaneous items of value were stolen from within. They included power tools, hand tools, fishing equipment and household items, with an estimated value in the thousands of dollars.

The sheriff’s department continued to actively investigate the burglaries. On Monday, April 4, the sheriff’s department initiated contact with Christopher Caya, 38, a suspect in the burglaries. Caya was ultimately arrested on the two counts of burglary.

Wauzeka community fundraises for park/garden in sisters’ memory

The family of Trinity and Lena Bartels, and the Wauzeka community, hope to create a memorial park and garden on Main Street where their home once stood. These two sisters were just 15 and 12 when a Jan. 19 house fire claimed their young lives. An April 23 benefit will help build the park in honor of the girls and how they touched the small community.

The video game phenomenon, Halo, announced, in late February, an update that pays tribute to Trinity and Lena Bartels. Because Adam Bartels is a well-known fan and player within the Halo community, developer 343 Industries created an in-game update called the “Spartans Never Walk Alone pack.” The pack contains the True Light emblem, which is named after the first initial of each of Adam and Rebecca’s daughters’ names, and is the first animated emblem presented in Halo 5. All players received this pack as part of a free update. Also, a special feature has been added in Halo 5’s new Arena map, Torque. As players look up and scan the stars above, the names Trinity and Lena will be visible in the night sky. (Facebook photo)

Sisters Trinity and Lena Bartels were always together. They were sweet girls with angelic faces, who enjoyed traveling with their parents and were blessed with a zest for life. They were bright, shining spirits within the small community of Wauzeka, where they attended school their entire lives.

But, on Jan. 19, 2016, the unthinkable happened.

A house fire that started late in the night on Jan. 18, and continued into Jan. 19, claimed the girls’ young lives. Just as they always were in life, they were together when they died.

The community of Wauzeka remains devastated over the tragic loss of two of its most innocent. Although, in a way, as tragedy sometimes does, the fire’s aftermath has seemed to bring the community closer. Also, the support, love and prayers have meant so much to the girls’ parents, Adam and Rebecca Bartels.

Gays Mills man admits taking sexually explicit photos of 12-year-old

A Gays Mills man who admitted sending sexually explicit photos of a minor to a Snapchat user he thought was his ex-wife pleaded guilty Wednesday in federal court to distributing child pornography.

Ricky Olson, 57, also stipulated that he attempted to send an obscene image of himself to a minor he knows, received sexually explicit images of the same minor and possessed child pornography.

According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Julie Pfluger:

Snapchat is an internet site where users can send each other photos which appear on computer or mobile devices for 10 seconds and then vanish. The site is designed not to store photos, but a user can take a “screen shot” of the displayed image, which Olson did.
