Hartig Drug contributes $5,000 toward library

The Prairie du Chien Memorial Library capital campaign has grown again, thanks to a $5,000 donation from Hartig Drug.

“Hartig Drug has been a key member of the Prairie du Chien business community for many years,” Library Board President Linda Munson said. “Their generous donation exemplifies their corporation mission statement to be ‘active in community.’ We appreciate their contribution, along with the contributions of all of our corporate and individual contributors.”

Century Hall in Wauzeka was the site for the presentation of the sixth annual Crawford County Leadership Awards, hosted by the Crawford County Community Fund (CCCF). Southwest Tech President Dr. Jason Wood was the keynote speaker. Camille Smith served as emcee, Sharon Murphy provided an update on activities of the CCCF and Bob Van Hoesen presented the awards. Music was provided by a flute ensemble from North Crawford School and Star Valley Flowers contributed the floral decorations.

Lyla LaVerne (Yttri) Watts

Lyla LaVerne (Yttri) Watts, 72, passed away on May 5, at the Gundersen Health System in La Crosse surrounded by family and friends. 

Lyla was born in Chicago, Ill. on Jan. 19, 1944 to Wanda Iola (Copus) and Lyle Yttri. 

Lyla married Martin ComStock Jr. on Sept. 16, 1961 in Prairie du Chien. They had 4 daughters and a son but later divorced. She was engaged to Lester J. Berns, whom she spent many years with until his passing, they have one daughter together. On May 11, 1991 Lyla married James Watts in Prairie du Chien.

Avis J. Smith

Avis J. Smith, 69, of McGregor passed away Thursday, May 5, at Thornton Manor in Lansing, Iowa. 

She was born Oct. 14, 1946 in Clay, W.V., the daughter of Jack and Mary (Davis) Cuttlip. Avis cooked at the Prairie Maison Care Center and enjoyed volunteering in her later years at the Great River Care Center in McGregor and Thornton Manor in Lansing. Avis was a member of the United Methodist Church in McGregor. She loved animals and belonged to the ASPCA.

Car Chase

Three caught following chase

On Tuesday, May 3 at 4:18 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department was notified of an erratic driver on Highway 35. A Sheriff’s Department deputy saw the vehicle and attempted to stop the vehicle. In an attempt to elude the deputy, the vehicle drove down an embankment through the yard of an unoccupied home along Highway 35 approximately a half mile north of Limery Road. The vehicle stopped behind the home and the three occupants fled on foot.

Prairie du Chien

Prairie du Chien suffered its first loss of the season 5-2 at the hands of visiting River Valley in an SWC baseball game Tuesday afternoon. 

Prairie got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second inning. 

Each team scored a run in the fourth as Prairie held a 2-1 lead.

The year 2016 will be the final one for longtime Crawford County Treasurer Martin Sprosty who will be stepping down after 44 years. Come January, the county will have a new treasurer because Sprosty will not be seeking re-election.

North Main Street, between Frederick and Washington, designated emergency truck route

An official city truck route map was approved by the Prairie du Chien Common Council Tuesday night. Despite citizen concerns that the Highway 18 Bypass may be extended onto North Main Street, that is not the case.

According to City Administrator Aaron Kramer, North Main Street, between Frederick and Washington Streets has been newly assigned as a temporary specially-designated truck route. In defining that term, he said that section of city street may allow legal operation of truck traffic only when the city’s department of public works and police chief determine that such usage is required due to natural or man-made disasters, construction or other unforeseen circumstances. He added that this would only be if truck usage on any other designated truck route was deemed dangerous or restricted.

Seneca senior class announces 2016 val and sal

Seneca valedictorian Kilian Boland and salutatorian Nicole Manders

Kilian Boland, son of David and Ann Boland, and Nicole Manders, daughter of Paul and Loretta Manders, have been named valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, for the Seneca High School graduating Class of 2016.

Kilian is a member of the National Honor Society and has been recognized for his academic achievements by being on the honor roll. During his high school career, he has participated in a variety of extracurricular activities including FFA, forensics, yearbook, and youth leadership. In addition to succeeding academically, Kilian has been involved in athletics, including basketball for four years, baseball for three years, and football for one year. Kilian plans to attend UW-La Crosse in the fall.

Margaret Mary Kramer

Margaret Mary Kramer, passed away at Cokato Manor on April 15, at the age of 89 years, seven months and 21 days.

Margaret was born Aug. 24, 1926, in Prairie du Chien, to John and Gertrude (Gokey) Fernette. She grew up in Prairie du Chien, where she graduated from high school in 1944. After high school, she went to Milwaukee and took a job at Allis Chalmers.
