Melvin Julius Burgus

 

Melvin Julius Burgus, 91, of Seneca, died May 23, at the Great River Care Center in McGregor, Iowa. 

Melvin was born April 7, 1925 in Seneca Township, the son of William Frederick and Maude (Ward) Burgus. He attended country school in Seneca. He was united in marriage to Loretta Leola Krachey on April 4, 1959. To this union four children were born, William, Donald, Duane and Teresa. In his younger years, Melvin was a truck driver. He was a farmer throughout Crawford County for many years. Melvin enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family and dog, Patch.

Memorial Day ceremonies planned in four communities

Ceremonies planned in four communities Several Memorial Day observances are scheduled in area communities next week, including Prairie du Chien, McGregor, Wauzeka and Bloomington-Glen Haven.

Prairie du Chien
The annual Memorial Day parade will kick off Prairie du Chien’s observance of the holiday on Monday, May 30, at 10:30 a.m. The marching units will proceed from the intersection of Blackhawk Avenue and Michigan Street to Beaumont Road and then south to the Fort Crawford Military Cemetery.

All marching units, including the honor guard, Legionnaires, VFW members and all ex-servicemen, Legion and VFW Auxiliaries, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, patriotic organizations, school children carrying flowers and flags, Bluff View School band and the Prairie du Chien High School band are requested to assemble at the FirstMerit Bank parking lot no later than 10:15 a.m. Monday.

Dairy royalty to be named

The Crawford County June Dairy Month Kick-Off Banquet will be held on Sunday, May 29 at the United Methodist Fellowship Hall, Eastman. The night will kick off at 7 p.m., with a cheese and cracker social where attendees can meet the candidates for the Crawford County Dairy Royalty contests. A spaghetti and chicken Alfredo dinner prepared by the Eastman United Methodist Church will follow at 7:30 p.m.

The program is filled with lots of delightful dairy tidbits, from the dairy promotion report, the introduction of the dairy breakfast host family and the honorary Dairy Month chairpersons, to the final messages from the 2015 Crawford County Dairy Royalty. This year’s candidates will present their prepared dairy speech as they are introduced, followed by the coronation of the 2016 Crawford County Dairy Princess and Little Miss Squirt, along with their attendants.

The Seneca High School softball team easily defeated visiting Kickapoo 14-9 in a Ridge and Valley contest Friday afternoon.

Seneca improved its record to 15-8 overall and 10-4 in conference action. 

Kickapoo fell to 3-14 on the season and 2-11 in the Ridge and Valley.

Gervase A. “Gerry” Arndt

 

 Gervase A. “Gerry” Arndt, 98, formerly of Markham, Ill., Framingham, Mass. and Chelmsford, Mass., passed away on May 19, at the Life Care Center in Billerica, Mass. He was the husband of the late Marie M. (Stoehr) Arndt, who passed away in 1987.

Born in Kendall, Wis. on March 28, 1918, he was a son of the late Walter W. and Myrtle (Abbott) Arndt.

Ethel Laufer

 

Ethel Laufer, 88, of McGregor, Iowa died Friday, May 20, at Gundersen Health Systems in La Crosse. 

Ethel was the daughter of Clarence and Edna (Drahn) Henkes and was born on Feb. 21, 1928 in McGregor, Iowa. She graduated from McGregor High School in 1946. Ethel was united in marriage with Donald LeRoy Laufer on April 16, 1948 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in McGregor, Iowa. Six children were born to this union, Donald Jr., Susan, Lynn, Mark, Karen and Michael. Ethel was a homemaker for her family. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, cooking and gardening in her younger years. Most of all, Ethel enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Elmer Dirksen

 

Elmer Dirksen, 85, of Eastman passed away Thursday, May 19, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, after a brief illness. 

He was born Aug. 19, 1930 in Lennox, S.D. the son of Henry and Fannie (Mundhenke) Dirksen. He married Mary Ann Kelly on Feb. 7, 1957 in Bryant, S.D. Elmer loved farming and tending animals. He was a good mechanic and enjoyed fishing. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be sadly missed by all.

Ruth Zlabek

 

Ruth Zlabek, 76, of Prairie du Chien passed away Friday, May 13, at the Great River Care center in McGregor. 

She was born Aug. 21, 1939 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of Russell and Marie Jacobs. She married Richard Zlabek on June 12, 1963 at St. Gabriel’s Church in Prairie du Chien. He preceded her in death on May 9, 2002. Ruth worked as a bookkeeper for the Brisbois Motor Inn in Prairie du Chien.
