Semi hauling hogs crashes on Hwy. 133, some pigs killed

On Nov. 2 at 9:55 a.m., Richard Kipp, 52, Fort Atkinson, Iowa, was westbound on Highway 133 four-tenths of a mile east of County K in Woodman Township operating a 2004 Freightliner tractor trailer loaded with 150 hogs all weighing approximately 270 pounds.

While negotiating a sharp curve the tractor trailer struck the guardrail and the trailer detached from the tractor. The trailer went through the guardrail and overturned on a steep embankment above the Wisconsin River.

Several of the pigs were ejected from the trailer and some were trapped inside. The Sheriff’s Office contacted Fennimore Livestock to corral the loose pigs as well as free the trapped pigs. Several pigs died from the crash.

PdC Main Street restrengthens focus on downtown businesses

By Correne Martin

Prairie du Chien Downtown Revitalization Inc. dissolved in January of 2014. By October last year, a new entity, PdC Main Street, was conceived with a focus on re-establishing the efforts of economic recovery, historic preservation and promotion of downtown businesses. Since then, PdC Main Street has predominantly organized itself and worked to improve public esteem surrounding such a local main street program.

“We’ve spent the past year creating the organization, electing a board and officers, appointing committee chairs, finding volunteers and working on publicity,” PdC Main Street Chair Chris Mara stated. “All of that has taken time and effort. We’ve also spent the year trying to foster some good will and improve our worth in the eyes of the public. PDRI failed for a number of reasons we’ve come to understand, but we’ve tried to move forward.”

City agrees to discuss Bridgeport border agreement, new Eagles Club possible

By Correne Martin

The Prairie du Chien Common Council has decided to accept an invitation from the Bridgeport Town Board for city representatives to meet and discuss a border agreement and related matters. After closed session during Tuesday night’s council meeting, the vote was 7-0 in agreement to meeting with the board. But the council wishes to hold the meeting in open session at a time and place to be agreed upon, versus the closed session the town board requested. The council also directed Mayor Dave Hemmer to appoint council members, city staff and/or residents to represent the city of Prairie du Chien at the meeting. A date has yet to be set for that discussion between the two governmental bodies.

Substantial personal donation given for new library

Sue Tiller, of Tiller’s Furniture in Prairie du Chien, donated $50,000 last week to the Prairie du Chien Memorial Library fundraising campaign. She is shown seated in one of two chairs she and her siblings donated to the library in 1999 in honor of the 50th anniversary of her parents, Franklin and Patricia Tiller. Prairie du Chien’s Memorial Library Capital Campaign received a generous personal donation of $50,000 from Major Sue Tiller.

Earlier this year, the city announced a $1.5 million Capital Campaign to match a $1.5 million contribution to the project by the common council. The project, estimated at $3 million, is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017.

“I remember walking, so many times, straight down Minnesota Street to the library, and then coming home with all my many borrowed treasures,” said Tiller, a local business leader, proud 20-year Army veteran and past president of the Friends of the Library. “I was introduced to so much growing up from the library but, most of all, I remember how safe and warm I felt just being there, reading there, among all the books. So, I can’t think of a better place to give support to than our little library, because it’s time to make it even bigger and better.”
