Prairie du Chien firemen recognized at awards banquet

The annual Prairie du Chien Firefighters Awards Banquet was held Saturday night at The Barn Restaurant in Prairie du Chien. Rookie of the Year and Firefighter of the Year distinctions were also presented. In addition, numerous honors were accorded to the firefighters who have reached milestones in their commitment to the department.

Wayne Koecke was named the 2014 Firefighter of the Year. Derrick Eastman was selected as the 2014 Rookie of the Year. The fire department’s officers choose the title winners each year. Rookies are eligible their first five years with the department.

According to Fire Chief Harry Remz, both honors are given to the men who have attended the highest percentage of fire calls, business meetings and practice meetings. Extra credit activities—such as fire prevention promotion, fire truck washing, fire station cleaning or triathlon volunteering—are also considered in the selection process.

PdC gymnasts at SWC Meet

The Prairie du Chien gymnastics team competed in the Southwest Wisconsin Conference Meet on Friday night.

Southwestern-Cuba City won the meet with 133.575 points. Prairie du Chien was fifth with 84.55.

Prairie du Chien will next travel to the Sectional Meet on Feb. 28 in Reedsburg.

River Ridge superintendent departing from district this week

This Friday, Feb. 27 will be Lee Pritzl’s last day as superintendent of River Ridge Schools. After three years in the district, Pritzl is moving back to the Marshfield area due to serious health issues in his family. He said he will select from a couple of job opportunities there—one in education and the other in ministry.

“I’ve got to be there for my family,” he said in a recent interview.

Since Pritzl announced he would be leaving a few weeks ago, he said he’s been overwhelmed by the “gracious and kind people who’ve come forward and said some really nice things I didn’t know they felt.”

Pritzl said he’s grown personally and professionally while at River Ridge. “We’ve worked hard to do things here and I’m thankful that we’ve all shared the common goal of maximizing students’ potential,” he stated.

On Saturday, Feb. 21 the Prairie du Chien Blackhawk Cheerleaders attended the WACPC (Wisconsin Association of Cheer and Pom Coaches) Northern Regional Cheer Competition held at Waupaca High School. Teams placing in the top halves of their divisions advanced on to state competition.

Seneca clinches R&V title

Seneca walloped visiting De Soto 70-33 to clinch the Ridge and Valley boys basketball crown Monday night.

Seneca built a 23-14 lead after the first period and a 36-23 halftime advantage.

Seneca took the second half 34-10 to breeze to victory.

Timothy Raymond Troester

Timothy Raymond Troester, 43, died on Monday, Feb. 16, at Crossing River Health in Prairie du Chien.

He was born Nov. 20, 1971 in Dubuque, Iowa to Raymond and Janis (Hamann) Troester. Timothy was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, McGregor. He graduated from Mar-Mac High School in 1990 and continued his education at U-W Platteville and then transferred to Upper Iowa, where he earned his BA in business. Timothy was united in marriage with Darcy Winters on March 9, 2011.

Marijuana, LSD and ecstasy found in drug bust, two arrested

The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office Investigators obtained and executed a narcotics-related search warrant at two separate residences, 137 and 141 Cedar Street in the village of Gays Mills, on Feb. 19, around 2:30 p.m.

The search warrant was the result of a lengthy investigation into the illegal possession and sale of narcotics at the residences. The occupants were Thomas Coleman, 50, and Rebecca Anderson, 42, (141 Cedar St.); Gerald Anderson III, 20, and Thomas Holtz, 21, (137 Cedar St.).

The search of the two residences uncovered numerous items associated with the suspected illegal sale and possession of narcotics. Subsequent to the search, Gerald Anderson III and Thomas Holtz were arrested and face possible charges including possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, possession of LSD, and possession of ecstasy.

The investigation remains open and additional charges may be brought against more individuals.

American Queen will make long-awaited, daylong stop in Prairie du Chien

The largest steamboat ever built, the grand American Queen will stop in Prairie du Chien on Wednesday, Aug. 12, as its passengers spend a full day touring the city’s historical attractions.

The Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Coordinator Patti Wacker have been working with Shore Excursions of America for the past two years to bring the American Queen to town. It’s been 20 years since it last stopped in Prairie du Chien.

The elegant steamboat will carry a potential 426 passengers, from lands as far away as California and Australia, up and down the Mississippi River from St. Louis to St. Paul. The paddlewheel boat will dock in Prairie du Chien at 8 a.m. and leave around 4 p.m. While here, the visitors will take group tours of the community and its most magnificent and memorable tourist destinations.
