Grasshoppers advance in American Legion State Tournament

The Prairie du Chien Grasshoppers second game of the American Legion State Tournament moved them one step closer to earning the champion title. 

In Thursday night’s game against Altoona, Casey Hogenson was the first pitcher of the evening. Altoona started the evening off with three runs, but Prairie du Chien rallied to score seven runs at the bottom of the inning.

Chas Sagedahl and Hogenson each carded RBI singles on the inning, while a triple by Dylan Yeomans brought in two RBIs. Finally, Hunter Sheckler ended the inning with a homerun and three RBIs. After just one inning, the score was 7-3, with the Hoppers in the lead.

In the second inning, Jon Dyer was brought in to replace Hogenson, and Altoona scored three runs on the inning.

The Prairie du Chien Grasshopper's first game of the American Legion State Tournament gave them a 1-3 win over Denmark.
 
Although Denmark recorded the first points of the game at the bottom of the second inning, the Grasshoppers battled back in the top of the sixth.

Kenneth I. Johnson

Kenneth I. Johnson, 82, of Prairie du Chien passed away Tuesday, July 26, at the Crossing Rivers Hospital. 

He was born June 26, 1934 in Coon Valley, the son of Laurence and Julia (Midtlien) Johnson. He attended Linrud Elementary School and graduated from Westby High School in 1952. Kenneth later graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Agriculture Education. He married Ruth Ann Walker on Oct. 14, 1956 at the Wyoming Valley Methodist Church near Spring Green. Kenneth devoted his career to youth and families as a 4H and Youth Agent in Waushara County in Wautoma, for 13 years and later in Crawford County at Prairie du Chien for 20 years.

Book brings alive ‘The Battle For Prairie du Chien’

The stories of our country’s past can be quite complicated. Telling them in a way that brings history alive takes a careful approach and a proficient knowledge of the events as they occurred.

Local historian Mary Elise Antoine has written three books on Prairie du Chien: the first was “Images of Prairie du Chien” in 2011, then came “Legendary Locals” in 2015, and just released is “The War of 1812 in Wisconsin: The Battle for Prairie du Chien.”

“The War of 1812 in Wisconsin” is a story that Antoine said “really hasn’t been told before now.” It’s one she started a long time ago when she worked at the Villa Louis as part of a research report she wrote on the battle for Prairie du Chien. In 2012, she revisited that report and decided to write on either side of the battle, from about 1780 through about 1816.

3M donates $150K to library

On Tuesday, 3M made a large contribution of $150,000 to the Prairie du Chien Library Capital Campaign. The Prairie du Chien Memorial Library Capital Campaign has taken a giant leap forward with a $150,000 donation from the 3M Foundation. A presentation of the donation was held on Tuesday, July 26, at the library.

“As I have said many times, the city of Prairie du Chien is truly blessed with many businesses and industries which are on the cutting edge of technology, innovation and philanthropy,” noted library board president Linda Munson, who is also a 3M retiree. “This contribution from 3M is unique in that a majority is a cash donation, and the remainder will be materials used for the expansion project that 3M manufactures and will donate to the actual construction. Overall, it is a really interesting and beneficial concept.”

With the gift from 3M, the Capital Campaign has passed the $900,000 mark in grants and donations, with a goal of $1.5 million.

Tune in to any news source and you will see what is coming to be known as “the war on cops.” Protests against police brutality are hot topics on TV, radio and social media. Hashtags such as #BlackLivesMatter, #AllLivesMatter and #BlueLivesMatter are dividing the nation, and it’s starting to cause concern.

“I believe that lives matter. Period,” said Sgt. Kyle Teynor, of the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

Erwin “Erv” Mueller

Erwin “Erv” Mueller, 77, Prairie du Chien, passed away peacefully surrounded with the love of his family on July 23, at the Crossing Rivers Health Center, Prairie du Chien after a brief illness. 

He was born at home in Read Township, Clayton County Iowa to Harry and Marie (Bente) Mueller Nov. 27, 1938, was baptized and confirmed at the Peace United Church of Christ of Elkader, Iowa.
