UW-P requests state funding for two construction projects

Prospective University of Wisconsin-Platteville (UW-P) students and their families might be interested to know that the university has made a request as part of the proposed UW System Budget for two major construction projects to improve their engineering and biology programs.

River Response Training

An oil containment boom was deployed Tuesday by personnel from several agencies. The boom is designed to capture oil in the event of an oil spill from a train derailment.

Members of various area agencies as well as people from the private sector were on the river in several boats during training Tuesday.

BNSF and CP Rail hold River Response Training in Prairie du Chien

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad (BNSF) and the Canadian Pacific Railroad (CP) sponsored an Upper Mississippi River Response Training exercise on and near the beach on St. Feriole Island on Aug. 8-9.

Lola M. (Borgedahl) Nash, 87, passed away on Thursday, July 28, at the Atrium Post Acute Care Center of Lancaster after a long illness.

She was born on July 25, 1929 to Sygrid and Dena (Grimsled) Borgedahl on the family farm in rural Ferryville, (which is currently Sugar Creek Bible Camp). She was baptized and confirmed at Utica Lutheran Church. She attended high school in Gays Mills. She married Samuel Nash in 1947 at Freeman Lutheran Church in Ferryville. They raised five children. The family moved to Prairie du Chien in 1965 and attended St Peter Lutheran Church.

Florence V. Hurda, 89, of Wauzeka passed away on Monday, Aug. 8, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien.

She was born on Jan. 14, 1927 at Barnum, Wis. to Ole and Jane (Dilley) Copus. She attended West Fork School. She was married on Sept. 14, 1946 in Wauzeka to John G. Hurda and he preceded her in death on Dec. 17, 1990. Florence was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Wauzeka and was a member of the women’s Bible study there.

Woman presumed drowned at the Wyalusing Beach

Official recovery efforts called off, volunteers continue search

Since Wednesday, Aug. 3, at 2:48 a.m., the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Bloomington Fire Department, have conducted recovery efforts for a presumed drowning victim in the Mississippi River at Wyalusing Beach. The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Virginia Ann Aberle, of Chicago, Ill.

After four days of recovery efforts, the difficult decision was made to call the search off, Sheriff Nate Dreckman said.

The sheriff’s office is grateful for the many volunteers who spent countless hours searching for Virginia in the Mississippi. Each day of the recovery, there were 10 to 15 boats and jet skis on the water with over 40 volunteers.

City’s concentration on flood mitigation continues

The city of Prairie du Chien continues its efforts to address flood and flash flood conditions on the east side of the community.

A contract with Gerke Excavating, of Tomah, has been approved to remove silt from Nommenson pond this fall. The pond affects water south of the Godden Pit watershed at the intersection of 22nd Street and Campion Boulevard, according to City Administrator Aaron Kramer. During its regular meeting Tuesday night, the common council voted to move forward with the $18,000 project, with about $8,000 in funds coming from excess money in the 2014-2016 capital projects fund and the remaining $10,000 coming from reallocated funds previously earmarked for the Old Rock School.

Restorative justice benefits community

Prairie du Chien Police Chief Chad Abram (second from left) and Detective Stacy Polodna (left) visited the Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution on April 29 to present to the Restorative Justice Class and receive a donation for the K-9 unit. They spoke to about 45 inmates and several staff about their perspectives on how crime affects the community as a whole, individual crime victims and themselves as police officers. Their message was well received by all who attended. Prior to the officers’ visit, PDCI staff led two fundraisers in which both staff and inmates participated, raising a total of $925.27. The money was donated to the K-9 unit for the purchase and training of the city’s new drug dog. Historical society members to celebrate 20th anniversary

The Prairie du Chien Historical Society plans to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the society during its membership picnic on Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Fort Crawford Museum.

In the 1980s a small group of people began to discuss the formation of a historical society to preserve and interpret the rich and varied history of Prairie du Chien. While there was the interest in the formation of an organization, the question always was where to have a museum to display objects and present programs. The community had always supported the Villa Louis and the Museum of Medical Progress, but neither interpreted the history of Prairie du Chien. Then, in 1994, the State Medical Society of Wisconsin offered an opportunity.
