Driver hits parked police car, receives numerous citations

An alleged drunken driver was arrested and charged after he hit a parked police car in Lansing, Iowa, but was pulled over in Crawford County.

According to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, on Saturday, Dec. 12, at 11:52 p.m., Tyler R. ‘Tis the season to drop a world-famous carp, Carp Fest festivities begin Dec. 26

A new Lucky the Carp will soon take his or her position amid the quirky chaos that is Carp Fest’s Droppin’ of the Carp. Prairie du Chien’s annual festival starts Dec. 26 and culminates with the carp drop at midnight on New Year’s Eve. (File photo)

Lucky the Carp has become quite the superstar fish in the Prairie du Chien community, so much so that he’s the bright-eyed, smiling face of the annual Carp Fest. He’s a world-famous, friendly symbol of the river, of fun times with family and friends, and of good fortune for the coming year.

2015 is the 15th year of this annual winter festival in Prairie du Chien.

“Time flies when we’re having fun,” said Tom Nelson, co-coordinator who, along with his wife Cathie, had the original idea that started Carp Fest. “Here we are in the Midwest, with an outdoor activity, at midnight, and we’re celebrating an iconic carp. That’s the uniqueness of it, and that kissing Lucky signifies bringing luck in the new year.”

“It’s hard to figure out a way in the middle of winter to get people outside,” Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Director Mike Ulrich added. “The partiers come out for this but also the families. It’s a lot of fun.”
