One block of Perry Street now one-way for school traffic

Marquette Road phase 2 pushed back again to 2018, still no word on Regal Marina

One block of Perry Street, between Beaumont Road and Prairie Street, will become one-way, from east to west, this week. The Prairie du Chien Common Council approved the change Tuesday night, upon a request from Holy Family Parish.

For the construction project at Prairie Catholic School, a new entrance was built along Perry Street where parents will drop off and pick up their children.

“We feel one-way traffic would make everything a little bit safer for the kids,” Father James Weighner told the council.

When asked if he’d spoken with the three homeowners on Perry Street about the reason for the parish’s request, Weighner said he’d been able to contact two of the three and believed their comments were positive.

Veterans program honors Civil War soldier in Bridgeport

A small program was held Thursday, Aug. 11, for Civil War U.S. Army Pvt. Garrett Butler, who is buried in the Bridgeport Cemetery. The Crawford County Veterans Service Office coordinated the historically honorable event, which was attended by Butler’s great-great-granddaughter Dorothy Huotari, of Sun City, Ariz., among others.

Gary Gundlach emceed the program and Pastor Andy Doll delivered the invocation. Remarks were made by Huotari, Doll gave a closing prayer and military honors accorded by the Prairie du Chien Honor Guard completed the ceremony.

Prairie du Chien historian Mary Antoine shared the story of Butler’s life:

Garrett Butler was born in 1826 (exact date unknown) in Massachusetts. He came to Wisconsin and settled in Oakfield, where he was a farmer. He married widow Hannah Madison and, together, they had three daughters.

County Board may borrow up to $800,000 for capital improvements

Free ‘Take a Deep Breath’ program to cover symptoms, therapies, proper management

A free educational program offering an overview of asthma symptoms, evaluations, therapy options and proper management will be offered to the public on Monday, Sept. 12, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., at the Crossing Rivers Health George Family Education Center in Prairie du Chien.

Crossing Rivers’ Allergy, Asthma, Immunology Specialist Dr. John Moore will present information and demonstrations, alongside Respiratory Therapist/Certified Asthma Educator Sheila Schuety. Partners of Crossing Rivers Health is hosting the program.

What exactly is asthma and what does a person with the condition experience?

One arrested in theft cases, investigation continues

A local man was taken into custody in connection with multiple thefts from vehicles around the city of Prairie du Chien since the week of July 25, according to the Prairie du Chien Police Department.

Investigations into the thefts were ongoing for weeks and, as a result of interviews with victims, witnesses and suspects, officers arrested Brandon Konicheck, 22, of Prairie du Chien, on Friday, Aug. 12. Police Chief Chad Abram said Konichek was taken to the Crawford County Jail, where he will face theft charges.

These cases remain open and under investigation. It is believed that further suspects may be involved. If the public has nay information regarding the thefts, contact the Prairie du Chien Police Department at 326-2421.

Two Soldiers Grove women jailed following drug busts

On Aug. 11, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department applied for and was granted two separate narcotic related search warrants in the county.

At 12:40 a.m., members of the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department along with members of the Prairie du Chien Police Department executed a search warrant at Debra Wetzel’s residence at the Golden Acres Apartment Complex in Soldiers Grove. Wetzel, 59, has been a person of interest in several narcotic related investigations for many months.  

Items found during the search of her residence were numerous items of drug paraphernalia including syringes, smoking devices and straws. A digital scale, liquid methamphetamine, powdered heroine and opiates and marijuana were also found and seized.

Man dies in Mt. Zion accident

On Wednesday, Aug. 10, at 12:58 p.m., the Crawford County Dispatch Center was notified of a two-vehicle crash on Highway 61 at Wheatville Road in Scott Township, Mount Zion.

Carl Maly, 86, Muscoda, died on Aug. 11 from injuries sustained in the accident.

According to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department, Maly was driving a 2006 Ford Freestar van south on Highway 61. He attempted to turn left into a driveway. When doing so, he turned into the path of a northbound 2002 Jeep Wrangler driven by Wendy Burkholder, 46, rural Gays Mills.

Burkholder and Maly both sustained injuries and were taken by ambulance to a Boscobel hospital.

Burkholder was treated for non-life threatening injuries.  Maly was flown by Med-Link Air to a Madison hospital for a possible head injury.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene.

Sheriff’s department warns about online scam

Over the past couple of months, the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department has investigated an online scam. As a result of this investigation, thousands of dollars worth of merchandise has been recovered and seized. Seized items included tablets, smart phones, jewelry, watches, MP3 players, shoes, clothes, etc.

Grant County has second drowning in two weeks

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Woodman Boat Landing Saturday afternoon, Aug. 13, just before 4 p.m., for a report of a possible drowning. Witnesses stated a man identified as Sherik Shah, 28, of Saginaw, Mich., originally from India, was on a sandbar kneeling in the water when the sandbar gave way. The male did not know how to swim and was calling out for help. His friend heard the yell for help and entered the water in an attempt to save him.

A female kayaker saw the friend struggling in the water and was able to get the friend aboard her kayak, according to witness statements. She saw the Shah go under water and be swept away by the current.

City to consider Country on the River relocation

Festival could move back to St. Feriole Island

Townsquare Live Events Wisconsin has made a request to the city of Prairie du Chien to relocate the Country on the River music festival to St. Feriole Island for 2017. The common council will consider the request at its regular meeting, Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m., at city hall.

Country on the River, currently held in the town of Bridgeport, was first held on St. Feriole Island in 2010 and 2011 before moving to Bridgeport.

According to a letter from Townsquare, the organizers are requesting the relocation due to an easement on the Bridgeport property that will not allow the festival to utilize the entire property in the future, making that location insufficient for space. Townsquare said it was unaware of this issue until recently and was able to obtain a variance to allow the 2016 festival to occur there; however, they have been informed no further variances will be permitted.
