Volunteers bring Christmas dinner to community

Trina Springsteen dumps precooked and cubed squash into a roaster with butter.

After a machine peeled the 200 pounds of potatoes, Bob Hamann (left) and Denny Kirschbaum, along with a few other assistants, cut the eyes from the potatoes and diced them prior to their cooking.

Curt Kramer and his excited little helpers, Carly, Josie and Sam, placed table cloths on the dining tables on Christmas Eve. Curt was happy to get his kids involved in such spirited community volunteerism.

Twenty turkeys, 14 hams, 200 pounds of potatoes, 600 dinner rolls, over 100 pies, four roasters each of squash, green bean casserole and stuffing, an industrial-sized bowl of cranberry sauce, and 32 pounds of butter. That’s how much food was prepared for the 500 to 600 diners who enjoyed the free Community Christmas Dinner in Prairie du Chien, Friday. About half of those people ate the home-cooked meal at St. Gabriel’s School basement, where the tables were decorated beautifully for Christmas, and the other half took carryouts or delivery.

PdC’s third council district will have a name on the spring ballot, fifth district still open

Todd Crotty, a resident of Prairie du Chien’s third aldermanic district, has filed a declaration of candidacy and a campaign registration form to run for election in the common council’s third district seat, which will be vacated by Kyle Kozelka upon his resignation from the council Dec. 31.

Crotty has also applied to fill the vacancy and could be appointed as soon as the council’s Jan. 5, 2016, meeting. Crotty’s application is the only one received by the city at this time. Applications for filling the vacancy should be submitted to the office of City Administrator Aaron Kramer no later than Monday, Jan. 4 at 4 p.m.

While the third district will have a name on the ballot in the spring, as of press time, the fifth aldermanic district looks as though it may not. Jean Titlbach, who currently holds the seat, has decided not to seek re-election.

Bedbug cases reported in Prairie du Chien area

Bedbugs appear flat, oval, wingless and are amber to rust colored. Bites from these insects are usually raised, itchy and occur at night. If you think you might have them, contact the public health department at 326-0229.

By Correne Martin

The Crawford County Public Health Department has received reports of and identified three cases of bedbugs in private homes in Prairie du Chien within the last two weeks.

Crawford County Public Health Director Gloria Wall is asking for the public’s cooperation in eliminating this problem in the community.

“Bedbugs have been widespread for some time. They spread and multiply rapidly,” she said. “If you think you might have them, watch for bites. Bedbug bites are usually raised, itchy and occur at night.”

If you see the insects (the bugs appear flat, oval, wingless, and are amber to rust colored), Wall suggests considering professional help to get rid of them.

“They don’t like light, and because they hide in crevices, it is hard to assure the bug bombs get to them,” she stated. “If you live in an apartment, call your landlord to help protect your neighboring tenants.”

Carp page proud to carry out his duties

By Correne Martin

Kyle Wilkinson has attended the annual Droppin’ of the Carp in Prairie du Chien since he was a small boy. So, it only made sense a couple of years ago that he become the very first carp page. As the youngest “member of the royal carp family,” Wilkinson, 17, is the only other diplomat than King and Queen Kenny and Jan Meyer and Carpmaster Shawn Redman to reside over the unique event and its associated Carp Fest.

“I brought up the idea to founder Tom Nelson and he thought it was a good idea,” Wilkinson said. “I asked him why there wasn’t a prince or princess or other royalty and he had me write up a two-page paper stating why I wanted to take on the role.”
