Renovated rec room offers new rental space at Hoffman Hall

Dan Titlbach (pictured) and fellow city employee Nick Gilberts, laid carpet tiles last week in the new rec room in the downstairs of Hoffman Hall. They had some assistance from Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution inmates.

Currently, foosball (pictured), ping pong and nok hockey tables as well as a 50-inch TV have been donated to Hoffman Hall and will be used in the new rec room by the end of March. More gently-used donations of games and accessories would be appreciated. (Photos by Correne Martin)

What was once a former locker room at Campion Jesuit High School is now being reinvigorated for the purpose of a recreation room at Hoffman Hall in Prairie du Chien. By the end of March, the renovated space will offer members as well as the public a new space for a variety of uses, such as parties, games and other casual entertainment.

Last week, city employees Dan Titlbach and Nick Gilberts, with assistance from Prairie du Chien Correctional Institution inmates, laid about a thousand carpet tiles—in warm earth tones—in the large, open space of Hoffman Hall’s downstairs.

Peoples State Bank gift pushes library funds over $350,000

The Prairie du Chien Memorial Library expansion project now has over $350,000 of the $1.5 million that’s needed from the capital campaign before construction begins in 2017.

The Prairie du Chien Memorial Library’s capital campaign has passed the $350,000 mark, thanks to a $100,000 contribution from Peoples State Bank. Last year, the city announced a $1.5 million campaign to match a $1.5 million common council contribution to the project. Estimated at $3 million, the project is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2017.

“A key component to the Capital Campaign will be the support of local businesses, and the contribution by Peoples State Bank is a large step forward in reaching our ultimate goal,” City Administrator Aaron Kramer said. “The city of Prairie du Chien is blessed with pro-active businesses who truly believe in moving the city forward and improving the quality of life for today’s residents as well as those who will enjoy the expanded library for decades to come. As we have stated in the past, every donation—no matter how large or small—is very appreciated and needed.”

Families, friends and strangers from all communities, needs and denominations are invited to attend the free monthly Come for Supper meal in the basement of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien. Always the third Thursday of the month, Feb. 18 is the next supper, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Cheeseburger soup is the main dish on this month’s menu.

An average of 225 meals are served by volunteers, once a month, for those who seek good company, are trying to make ends meet, or simply want a night off from cooking.

The Prairie du Chien Come for Supper provision has been offered publicly since April 2009, when a local group of about five volunteers helped out at a free meal at Our Savior’s church in La Crosse and fell in love with the idea.

“We had no idea, when we started, that we’d become part of a movement,” Pastor Joe Irvin said, recognizing that a multitude of similar meals are shared in communities across the region.
