Evelyn B. Seeley died Feb. 26, after an extended illness. 

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 14, at 10:30 a.m. at Cornerstone Foursquare Church in Prairie du Chien. Luncheon will be held after the service, followed by interment at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in McGregor, IA

Timberwolf Invite

The River Ridge track team hosted the Timberwolf Invitational Friday afternoon in Bloomington. 

North Crawford won the boys meet with 167 points. The Platteville JV was second with 138.5. River Ridge had 112, Cassville 69, De Soto 64, Wauzeka-Steuben 56.5, Dodgeville-Mineral Point 48, Fennimore 35, and Seneca 4.

Dancing with the Cancer Kickin' Hawkettes

Max Erickson, a Prairie du Chien police officer, and his partner Katie Zahara, had the sold-out crowd hooting and hollering as they accomplished countless slick tricks during their dance to the 1960s party rock classic “Mony Mony.” Erickson and Zahara finished second in the rankings by just four-tenths of a point, with a score of 29.0. They were praised for clearly spending a significant amount of time practicing their routine. Judge Cindy Hertrampf even labeled them, “Spunky, sparkly and stupendous!” Taking first place in judges points was the duo of Dan Moris, of Q94 Radio, and Paige Severson, who entertained with a lively swing dance to “Zoot Suit Riot.”

Jan Waller, of Peoples State Bank, danced with Morgan Kiesau to Elvis Presley’s “Stop, Look and Listen.” Judges felt Waller had great hip action and that the duo was well-synchronized in their performance. Waller earned a score of 27.2 from the judges and was in the top three among People’s Choice selections.

Community volunteer Bob Witt paired up with Bree Holler for a dance to “Soul Man,” by the Blues Brothers. The judges were impressed by Witt’s flexibility, charisma and unique moves. According to Shelly Rider, one of the organizers of Dancing with the Cancer Kickin’ Hawkettes, the money raised at the event could help the American Cancer Society offer more than 150 days of housing at a Hope Lodge for cancer patients and their families. Also, more than 700 people could receive rides for their treatment or patient navigator services for their treatment, and the dollars raised could fully fund an additional researcher. “This is truly amazing to think about the impact to so many lives from what was accomplished,” she said.

The second annual Dancing with the Cancer Kickin’ Hawkettes Wednesday, April 27, at the Dousman House, featured 10 local celebrities paired with members of the Prairie du Chien High School Hawkettes dance team. A total of $12,250 was raised at this event for the Great River Relay for Life. Dr. Michael Rogge, of Prairie du Chien’s Mayo Clinic, and his partner Katie Licht, dressed the part and got into true character while shaking it to 1990s hip hop tune “Ice Ice Baby,” by Vanilla Ice. The two scored 27.9 out of 30 to place fourth in the judges’ eyes but were the winners of the People’s Choice trophies for receiving the most votes from the crowd as well as the voting public before the event. The city of Prairie du Chien is in the process of upgrading its dock situation in order to offer better access for boaters, anglers, canoeists and kayakers to enjoy the Mississippi River as well as local businesses.

Arbor Day Celebration at Memorial Gardens

The first graders all seemed to know the right answers to tree-related trivia questions asked by guest speaker Mark Pedretti during the annual Arbor Day Celebration Friday.

Volunteer Mark Pedretti explains to the youth about how the rings inside a tree can tell how old that tree is and also how wet or dry the summers were during its life cycle.

Arbor Day is celebrated by the Prairie du Chien Parks and Recreation Department every year with a special program from PdC public and private school first graders at the St. Feriole Island Memorial Gardens. Local man arrested after meth found in his vehicle

On April 25, at approximately 5:40 p.m., the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit initiated a traffic stop on a 1994 Ford Ranger being operated by Eric Schultz, 34, of Prairie du Chien, in Bridgeport Township. The deputy made contact with Shultz, and in plain view observed what appeared to be drug paraphernalia.

K-9 Breck was utilized for a sniff of the vehicle and alerted to the presence of one or more controlled substances he is trained to detect. A search of the vehicle was conducted and deputies located several individually packaged bags of crystal methamphetamine totaling ½ of an ounce, along with a digital scale, several baggies used for packaging controlled substances, schedule II narcotics, marijuana, marijuana paraphernalia and cash within the vehicle.

Teen injured in a rollover crash Friday

An area teenager was injured and his vehicle severely damaged in a one-vehicle rollover Friday morning, April 29, in the village of Steuben, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

On Friday, at 7:39 a.m., the sheriff’s department was notified of a crash with injuries on Stockyard Road, about four-tenths of a mile south of Drake Road in Steuben.

Garrett Groom, 16, of Steuben, was traveling south on Stockyard Road when he lost control of his 2000 Dodge Dakota pickup while negotiating a curve. The truck went off the west side shoulder, causing Groom to lose control of his vehicle. He attempted to regain control, overcorrected, crossed both lanes of the road, and went over the east side embankment, causing the vehicle to overturn.

UTV goes off embankment on private road

One man was injured when a utility terrain vehicle went off an embankment in Wauzeka Township Sunday, May 1, according to the Crawford County Sheriff’s Department.

On Sunday, at 1:09 p.m., the sheriff’s department was notified of a UTV accident on a private road at 53962 Hwy. 60 in rural Wauzeka.

Michael Gillitzer Sr., 67, was operating the UTV when the vehicle left the roadway, went over an embankment about 40 to 50 feet, and came to a rest on the driver’s side. Gillitzer was transported to the Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien for treatment.

Gillitzer’s passengers, his two young grandchildren, were reportedly uninjured.

The Wauzeka First Responders and Tri- State EMS both assisted at the scene.

Prairie du Chien welcome center opens for 37th tourism season

The Travel Wisconsin Welcome Center in Prairie du Chien, also home to the PdC Area Chamber of Commerce office, was recently spruced up in anticipation of the tourism season. Beginning today, May 2, the facility will be open seven days a week through Nov. 4. Over 15 volunteers and three part-time paid staff will work inside the center, which provides information about over 200 tourism destinations in the tri-state area—from here to Spring Green, Delavan, Hayward, Marshfield, Port Washington and everywhere in between.

The interior walls of the welcome center were repainted, the city of Prairie du Chien signs and Wisconsin Travel Center sign were redone and the lights on the storage building near the center were replaced.

“I think people should be very proud of the welcome center here in Prairie du Chien. It puts us on the map,” Chamber President and CEO Bob Moses stated. “It’s nice for our communities on the Iowa side too.”
