PdC native, canine find talent in search and rescue

Adam Kelly and his adopted dog Zephyr conduct search and rescue missions together in Michigan. (Submitted photos)

Adam Kelly and Zephyr make a discovery on one of their missions.

Zephyr gets some training done on the water.

The search and rescue dog has plenty of time to play too. Here she is dashing through the snow.

By Rachel Mergen

Adam Kelly, a Prairie du Chien native, has lived the vast majority of his life with man’s best friend loyally at his side. For as long as Adam can remember, his family has been the proud owners of a furry companion, and the longest gap he has ever experienced without a dog was his time working toward bachelor’s and master’s degrees. One of the most exciting moments to him was just being able to have a dog once again when he went to Florida for further education.

Adam’s family dog, Zephyr, isn’t exactly the average pet though. Zephyr, now living in Michigan, finds herself as a well-trained, search-and-rescue (SAR) canine.

Zephyr’s life was given a second chance when rescued as a stray and put up for adoption at a Florida PetSmart. Adam accidentally came across the German Shepherd mix puppy, when he had casually stepped into the store to find some treats for his lapdog, Roxie.

LaRiviere Park nature center building in need of a new home

By Correne Martin

The nature center at LaRiviere Park needs to go, and the city of Prairie du Chien would like to offer it to the public first, at the cost of self-removal, before demolishing it. This decision was made at Tuesday night’s common council meeting, upon recommendation from the LaRiviere Park Board.

According to city history, this Design Home Building was moved from the city sewer plant and previously used as a contractors unit in 1990 at no cost to the city. Initially, it was used by Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and cross country teams, as well as a nature center one summer. The last time the building was actually used was 10 years ago.

The city inspector advised that upgrading the facility for public use would mean providing electrical, water, water heater and bathroom upgrades according to state code. The roof would need to be replaced. The cost for all this would likely be between $10,000 and $15,000.

Human services head named acting health director

By Correne Martin

Disciplinary action was dealt recently against two veteran Crawford County Health Department leaders. Director Gloria Wall and Public Health Nurse Judy Powell are no longer employees of the department, according to minutes from recent county board personnel committee meetings.

Dan McWilliams, county human services director, has been appointed acting health director. The committee also approved a new job description for public health supervisor/officer and is discussing combining the county human services and health departments into one, moving forward.

“We really need a county health officer and we’re required by the state to have one,” McWilliams indicated. “We’re now recruiting a supervisor who will be qualified as an officer.”
