A FAMILY TALE

A well-documented family history needn’t be a dry read with limited audience appeal. In fact, as former Elkader resident Larry Gamble has proven, a collection of family stories can read like a page-turning novel with unexpected twist, turns and tidbits—especially if the writer is as candid and forthcoming as Gamble. He doesn’t flinch from sharing stories that others might be reluctant to disclose, which makes his book all the more readable by people not even related to him.

Phyllis Bergan

Phyllis Marilyn Bergan, 81, of Elkader, passed away November 30, 2015, at Central Community Hospital, Elkader, surrounded by her loving family. She was born February 23, 1934, in Central City, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Rachel (Batchelder) Goodlove. She was raised by her mother and stepfather, Roland Walz. Marilyn attended country school in the Central City area and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1952, and then Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids. She practiced as a beautician in her mother’s beauty shop, Ra Chellen’s Beauty Salon in Elkader. After starting her family, she opened a salon at her home on the farm in rural Elkader.

CENTRAL BUSES HAVE CAMERAS

Central Schools recently took a big step to further ensure the safety of its students: The school equipped its buses with security cameras. According to Superintendent Nick Trenkamp, all full-time route buses now have cameras that capture images from inside and outside the bus from multiple angles.

Kenneth Hubbard

Kenneth Calvin Hubbard, 88, of Mederville, died peacefully Friday, November 20, 2015, at the Convalescent Home in Edgewood, following a short illness.

He was born March 28, 1927, to Charlie and Alice (Nading) Hubbard, rural Mederville. He attended country schools, served in the Army from 1946-47 in Kentucky, worked as a mechanic in Elkader, Edgewood, and Delhi. He received much Ford training early in his career.

Neil Krieg

Neal S. Krieg, 78, died Sunday, November 22, 2015, at the Central Community Hospital. He was born September 2, 1937, in Elkader to Leonard Henry Krieg and Eloise Leah Musfeldt. Neal graduated from Elkader Central High School in 1955. He was employed at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids until 1958.

A house with lights glowing through the windows, smoke blowing from the chimney, blankets strewn around the living room, the aroma of supper cooking in the kitchen, and love felt throughout.  This is what we cherish most, especially during November, the month of giving thanks. It’s not coincidental that November is also National Adoption Month, a time to promote awareness of the number of children in foster care who are waiting for a forever home.

MAKING HOLIDAYS MERRIER FOR KIDS

Though it’s currently empty, the cavernous main room of the old St. Olaf auditorium soon will be packed with volunteers busily stacking tables with towering piles of homemade quilts, new pajamas, cushy pillows, warm mittens, gloves, coats and, of course, new toys and gift items. All of the activity supports the Shepherd of the Hills annual “Christmas Just 4 Kids” project.

As a senior in high school, Tammy (Peake) Sylvester had already decided to join the Navy by enrolling their delayed entry program. Her father, Ronald, had served in the Navy for four years while her oldest brother, Jeff, enlisted right out of high school and served for 16 years in submarines. Another brother, Craig, served for six years in the Navy as a cryptologist technician.
