The Wauzeka-Steuben Hornets boys basketball team entered last week looking to build momentum off their come from behind win over Prairie du Chien while facing a tall task in four games in five days.
First up for the Hornets was a trip to Riverdale last Monday, Feb. 9. The Chieftains had other ideas however and delivered the Hornets a 56-45 defeat. Senior Cooper Lomas led the Hornets in scoring with 15 points and in rebounding with 11. Also getting in the scoring log for W-S was senior Theo Millin (12 points), sophomore Josh Martin (eight points), sophomore Cody Wagner (six points) and senior Julius Cooley (four points).
The Hornets made the short drive to Boscobel the following evening and fell behind the Bulldogs 27-12 at halftime before rallying in the second half to outscore Boscobel 31-24 but it wasn’t enough to overcome the sluggish first half as Boscobel defeated the Hornets 51-43.
Lomas was once again the Hornets leading scorer (15 points) and rebounder (nine rebounds). He was followed by Millin (14 points), Martin (seven points), Bentley Dums (five points) and Cooley (two points).
The Hornets returned home last Thursday night as they welcomed the Seneca Royals to the Hornets’ Nest and the visitors sent the hosts to their third consecutive loss with a 59-37 defeat. Final stats were not available for the Hornets as of press time.
Wauzeka-Steuben wrapped up the week last Friday night with a road game at De Soto. The host Pirates took a 28-20 halftime lead before pulling away from the Hornets in the second half to hand the Hornets a 58-38 defeat. Lomas scored 22 points and collected 10 rebounds to once again lead the Hornets in both categories. Dums added nine points on three-of-three shooting from behind the three-point line. Rounding out the scoring for the Hornets was Cooley (four points) and Martin (three points).
Wauzeka-Steuben dropped to 4-16 overall with the four losses.
