The Times-Register received two awards in the 2026 Iowa Better Newspaper Contests, marking the 12th consecutive year the newspaper has been honored. The awards were announced during the Iowa Newspaper Association’s awards ceremony on Feb. 5 in Des Moines.
The contests included approximately 3,164 entries in dozens of categories, and were judged by the Minnesota Newspaper Association based on circulation. The Times-Register is in Weekly Class II for newspapers published weekly with circulation between 701 and 1,300.
Graphic designer Kim Corpian received second place for best ad designer, a category that encompassed a variety of ads Corpian designed over the past year.
The judge said, “The designer’s use of color is consistently strong, which really enhances the impact of each ad.”
Times-Register editor Audrey Posten earned third place for best news story. The article, entitled “Effigy Mounds employee feels sadness, confusion as NPS firings hit close to home,” described the firing of local resident Brian Gibbs and other National Park Service employees last February.
“I remembered seeing this federal worker’s photo and story shared on social media,” said the judge, “so was intrigued to read more about his story. Great job localizing a national topic.”
