Central/Ed-Co wrestler Braxton Bormann has qualified for the Iowa High School Athletic Association State Wrestling Tournament for the fourth time in his career. The senior punched his ticket Feb. 14, after placing second at 150 pounds at the Class 1A district meet at Edgewood-Colesburg High School.
“It’s cool. I’m happy to do it,” Bormann said. “But the job’s not done yet. I want to make a run and end with a bang.”
Bormann breezed to the championship match with falls in the quarter- and semifinals. However, Preston Hunter of Beckman Catholic eked out a 3-1 decision, handing Bormann his first loss of the season and forcing him into a wrestle back for second place.
The senior delivered under pressure, scoring a 15-0 technical fall over Clayton Ridge’s Anthony Sandoval to seal state qualification.
“I felt like I wrestled decent, but there are definitely some things to improve,” Bormann said.
Overall, he added, “I’ve put a lot of work in, and I’ve gotten to the point where I feel like I’m peaking at the right time.”
Bormann enters the state tournament as the 13th seed at 150 pounds. He’ll wrestle 20 seed Nathan Roemer of Mount Ayr in the opening round on Thursday morning, Feb. 19.
After previously advancing to the quarterfinals, Bormann now has his sights set on the podium. He said three years of experience will help.
“I’ve made it to the quarters, and the further you get, it gets more loud,” he explained. “I’ve been in that environment.”
In Des Moines, said Bormann, “I have to let it fly. I can’t close up. I have to wrestle offensively.”
Bormann is appreciative of his family, coaches and fellow wrestlers and teammates for supporting and helping him through not only this season, but his whole wrestling career.
“I appreciate the wrestling community—and community in general—for supporting me,” he said.
Two other Central/Ed-Co wrestlers placed at Saturday’s district meet. That included freshman George Reimer, who finished third after losing a wrestle back at 132 pounds. Tallen Mormann earned fourth at 113.
Jamison Feickert (120), Eddie DeShaw (126), Nolan Gaul (138), Kinnick Robbins (144), Zane Embretson (175) and Kayden Williams (215) did not place in their respective weight classes.
