Cadets beat Bulldogs in OT

The MFL MarMac boys basketball team closed out its regular season on Feb. 10, in a 90-84 overtime loss at Crestwood. 

 

After trailing 38-31 at halftime, the Bulldogs out-scored the Cadets 25-19 in the third quarter to come within one point heading into the final frame. The teams traded points in the proceeding minutes, ending regulation tied 76-76. However, Crestwood put up 14 overtime points to MFL MarMac’s eight, sealing the victory.

 

Both teams shot over 45 percent from the field and sunk 11 three-pointers. The Cadets had an advantage from the foul line, though, taking eight more free throw attempts than the Bulldogs and making 13 of 22. MFL MarMac was 9-14 from the charity stripe. 

 

Crestwood also boasted a 46 versus 34 rebounding advantage, including limiting the Bulldogs to just nine offensive rebounds.

 

Senior Carter Lightfoot dazzled with 32 points—12 of which came from behind the arc. He also led the Bulldogs with seven assists and grabbed four rebounds.

 

Fellow senior Wesley Corlett notched another double-double with an impressive 25 points and 12 rebounds. His four steals and three blocks were team highs as well.

 

Sophomore Landon Meyer hit a pair of three-pointers for six of his 10 points, and snagged four rebounds and a steal. 

 

Senior Eli Hanson put up a solid seven points—six of them coming from long range—along with five rebounds, two assists and a steal.

 

The Bulldogs finished the regular season 12-9 and fourth in the Upper Iowa Conference big division with a record of 8-8. Crestwood won the UIC title with a 15-1 mark, followed by South Winneshiek at 14-2. 

 

MFL MarMac began postseason play in Class 2A Substate 4 at home against Dike-New Hartford on Feb. 16.
