The Central girls basketball team snapped a seven-game losing skid with a 46-34 victory over Clayton Ridge on Jan. 22.
It was a back-and-forth game between the two Upper Iowa Conference opponents. The Warriors led 18-11 at halftime, before the Eagles inched within four points, at 28-24, by the end of the third quarter. However, Central ended the contest on an 18-10 run to seal the win.
Central benefitted from 25 Clayton Ridge turnovers and a free throw attempt imbalance. They took 22 shots from the foul line compared to just six by the Eagles, and made 14 of them.
Layla Embretson earned a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, in addition to dishing out an assists. Brylee Erickson was Central’s points leader, with 16, and also contributed three assists, two steals and two rebounds. Blair Scherf supported the effort with seven points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Oakley Armstrong netted six points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals.
The win improved the Warriors to 6-10 overall and 4-7 in conference action. This week, they hosted Turkey Valley—the team atop the UIC small school division standings—on Jan. 27. They will welcome winless Cedar Valley Christian to Elkader on Jan. 30.
