One of the most intriguing week six matchups in Wisconsin took place in Illinois last Friday afternoon as the Division 7 eighth-ranked Seneca-Wauzeka-Steuben Bluegolds suffered their first loss of the season as they were defeated 14-7 by the third-ranked Black Hawk/Warren (Ill.) Warriors in an afternoon Six Rivers Conference game played at Warren High School.
A defensive battle for most of the game, the Bluegolds got on the scoreboard first with a second quarter touchdown by Cooper Lomas with 9:43 remaining in the second quarter. The Warriors answered with a touchdown run of their own. A failed two-point conversion kept the score 7-6 in favor of the Bluegolds midway through the second quarter. The Warriors managed to take the lead with 0:53 left in the first half thanks to a passing touchdown. The two-point conversion attempt was successful this time and the Warriors now lead 14-7. S-W-S attempted a hail mary pass to end the first half but the pass was intercepted by the Black Hawk/Warren defense.
Neither team could find the end zone in the second half as the game ended 14-7 in favor of the host Warriors. Black Hawk/Warren improved to 6-0 (4-0) with the win, while the Bluegolds dropped to 5-1 (3-1) with the loss. Complete stats were not available as of press time.
The Bluegolds are back in Wauzeka this Friday night as they take on another top-10 ranked opponent in Division 7 when second ranked (and undefeated) Potosi/Cassville comes to town. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
