Sept. 4 was another great weather day for runners, as the Central boys and girls cross country teams competed in the MFL MarMac Invitational at Tri City Golf Course near Luana.
“And the good number of our runners who posted course best marks for this tough course is testament to that good weather,” said coach Martha Bauder.
Nine athletes—boys Bryce Heller, Henry Reimer, Declan Finley, Jesse Polkinghorn, Tyce Zittergruen and Breckon Holst and girls Lilly Becwar, Blair Scherf and Mya Gregerson—all had course bests. Five runners—Becwar, Payton Stannard, Finley, Carson Ruegnitz and Lukas Friedlein—turned in season best marks.
The highlight of the meet was the Warrior boys placing first of eight teams, their score of 47 edging North Fayette Valley’s 55 and Prairie du Chien’s 70.
Four team members placed within the top 10 and medaled, led by Ruegnitz in fifth with a time of 19:00.72. Reimer, Polkinghorn and Zittergruen swept the eighth through 10th positions, with respective times of 19:54.99, 19:56.18 and 19:58.57. Teammate Finley wasn’t far behind, crossing in 20:25.09 for 16th place. Cruz Healy posted a 20:28.39 for 19th place, followed by Michael White in 27th with a time of 21:48.49 and Holst 32nd with a 22:34.15. Coming in 37th in a time of 23:24.09 was Heller, while Friedlein was 47th at 24:12.17 and Griffin Koehn 55th at 25:43.09.
On the girls side, the Warriors placed fourth overall and a close second among Class 1A teams. Scherf had the top time of 24:08.88, ranking her 13th among all the runners. Stannard crossed the line in 25:50.27 for 27th place, while Becwar raced to 34th on a time of 28:05.78. Gregerson was 41st with a 29:09.13, then Hannah Friedlein came in 47th with a 31:02.55.
Central athletes will run in a pair of meets this week, at the Guttenberg Golf and Country Club on Sept. 9, then at North Fayette Valley on Sept. 11.
