Candidate filing opens for city and school elections

Election day is less than three months away, on Tuesday, Nov. 4. The candidate filing period will soon open for upcoming city and school elections across Clayton County. 

For cities requiring primaries (Elkport, Garber, North Buena Vista and Osterdock), the filing period is Aug. 11 through 28. For all other cities and school boards, the filing period is Aug. 25 through Sept. 18. To qualify, candidates must complete a nomination petition and affidavit of candidacy. 

Candidates in city elections will file with the Clayton County Auditor’s Office. A minimum of 10 signatures are required, but extra signatures are always recommended.

City elections include the following races:

•Clayton: mayor, five council seats

•Edgewood: three council seats

•Elkader: three council seats

•Elkport: mayor, three council seats

•Farmersburg: mayor, two council seats

•Garber: mayor, five council seats

•Garnavillo: three council seats

•Guttenberg: mayor, three council seats

•Luana: mayor, two council seats

•Marquette: mayor, three council seats

•McGregor: mayor, three council seats

•Monona: mayor, three council seats

•North Buena Vista: mayor, three council seats

•Osterdock: mayor, five council seats

•Postville: mayor, two council seats

•St. Olaf: mayor, five council seats

•Strawberry Point: mayor, two council seats, treasurer

•Volga: mayor, five council seats

School board candidates will file with their school secretary. The number of signatures required varies by district: Central (23), Clayton Ridge (35), MFL MarMac (36) and Starmont (24).

School board elections include the following races:

•Central: four seats

•Clayton Ridge: three seats

•MFL MarMac: four seats

•Starmont: two seats
