The Seneca Royals softball team earned a trio of road wins last week, including a high scoring 13-11 win at Scenic Bluffs leader Royall last Friday evening.

First up for Seneca last week was a pair of road conference games last Tuesday, April 22 at Kickapoo and last Thursday, April 24 at North Crawford.

The Royals jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on Kickapoo before the hosts answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first inning. The score remained 3-1 until the top of the fourth inning when Seneca’s offense finally erupted with seven runs to take an 8-3 lead. The Royals added a run in the fifth, three more runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 16-3 before the host Panthers scored twice in their half of the seventh as the game ended 16-5 in favor of Seneca.

Grace Varo (2-for-3 with two walks, four runs scored and two RBIs), Addison Davidson (2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs), Kylie Chambers (2-for-4 with a double, a walk and two runs scored), Raya Wallin (2-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs) and Brigid Hall (2-for-4 with a double and one RBI) each had multiple hits off Kickapoo pitching in the win.

Against North Crawford two days later, the Royals scored six rus in the top of the first inning and never looked back as they claimed a 21-3 win in five innings over the Trojans. Seneca scored in every inning, adding four runs in the second, five in the third, two in the fourth and four in the fifth. North Crawford managed to avoid the shutout with two runs in the third and one in the fourth.

Seneca’s offense had 11 hits in the win, including multiple hit games from Davidson (2-for-5 with two runs scored), Chambers (2-for-4 with a double, five runs scored and two RBIs) and Karsyn Thoma (2-for-3 with one run scored and two RBIs). Wallin added a double while going 1-for-2 with two walks, five runs scored and three RBIs. Also driving in runs for the Royals were Brittany Heisz (1-for-3 with one run scored and three RBIs), Hall (one RBI), Camryn Lenzendorf (1-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI), Lily Payne (1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and one RBI) and Maya Buffington (one RBI).

Hall earned the win after going two innings in the pitcher’s circle, allowing only two walks and zero runs or hits while striking out two. Chambers finished the last three innings for the Royals (three runs allowed (0 earned) on five hits and one walk allowed with one strike out.

Wrapping up the week at Royall High School last Friday, the Seneca Royals found themselves quickly trailing 4-0 after one inning. The Royals responded to the Panthers quick start by scoring five runs in the top of the second to take their first lead of the game at 5-4. Royall answered with a run in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 5-5.  Seneca’s offense answered the call once again and put five runs on the scoreboard in the third to retake the lead at 10-5. Once again the lead would be short lived as Royall’s offense rallied for five runs as the game went to the fourth tied 10-10.

For a third consecutive inning, Seneca’s offense answered Royall’s offense by scoring twice to take a 12-10 lead. The Royals managed to keep the Panthers scoreless for each of the next three innings while adding another run of their own in the sixth to go up 13-10 on the Panthers. Royall would go on to score a run in the bottom of the seventh but that would be it as Seneca would hold on for a wild 13-11 win for their fourth straight win and improve their overall record to 6-5 and their Ridge & Valley Conference record to 5-2, two games back of first place Wauzeka-Steuben.

Offensively, the Royals scored their 13 runs on just seven hits. Leading Seneca’s offensive attack in the win was Payne (2-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBIs), Thoma (2-for-5 with three runs scored), Davidson (2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs) and Lenzendorf (0-for-1 with three walks and four runs scored). Hall (11 runs allowed (seven earned) on 12 hits and five walks with seven strikeouts in seven innings pitched) earned the complete game victory for Seneca.
Following yesterday’s makeup home game with the Hornets, the Royals conclude the week with home games against La Farge tomorrow and this Friday vs. River Ridge starting at 5:00 p.m.
