After kicking off their 18-game conference schedule with four consecutive victories, coach Wade Winkers’ River Ridge softball squad suffered its first league loss of the season, and now sits 4-1 in Six Rivers conference play.
The Timberwolves began last week’s action with a 4-2 victory over visiting Potosi/Cassville, then suffered a 9-1 loss to host Barneveld the following Thursday night.
Against visiting Potosi/Cassville last Tuesday night, the host Timberwolves used two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and one in the sixth to secure a 4-2 victory and improve to 4-0 in conference action.
After giving up one run to the Chieftains in each of the second and third innings, River Ridge plated their first run of the contest in the bottom of the third where lead-off batter Josey Drone reached base on a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
Coach Winkers’ squad then took their first led of the contest in the bottom of the fifth, where Drone reached base on her third single of the game and scored on a sacrifice fly hit by Abby Doyle.
Also in the fifth, Erin Adrian, who reached base on an error, scored on a double hit by Harper Kramer.
The Timberwolves added another run in the bottom of the sixth, where Mallory Crubel started things off with a lead-off single and later scored on an RBI single hit by Josey Drone, her fourth hit of the contest.
Of River Ridge’s seven hits, Drone was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI, while Kramer was 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
Erin Adrian collected the win in the pitching circle, giving up two runs, one earned, off three hits. She also struck out 11 batters and did not walk any.
Last Thursday night in Barneveld the bats were not as hot for the Timberwolves, who were limited to just four hits, while the defense committed five costly errors in a 9-1 loss to the host Eagles.
The Timberwolves, who left five runners on base in the seven-inning contest, scored their only run in the top of the fifth inning, where Harper Kramer scored from second on an RBI double by Mallory Crubel.
In a game where hits were hard to come by for the Timberwolves, Barneveld pitcher Hannah Esch struck out 13 River Ridge batters and walked just two.
Erin Adrian took the loss in the pitching circle, where she allowed nine runs, six earned off 12 hits in five complete innings of work. During that time she also struck out two batters and walked two before being replaced by Abby Doyle to start the sixth.
