The MFL MarMac girls basketball team went 1-1 last week, earning another Upper Iowa Conference victory over South Winneshiek, before dropping a game to Waukon.

The Bulldogs scored an easy 44-14 win over the Warriors in early December, but the Jan. 21 match-up was much closer. After MFL MarMac opened up a 23-13 halftime lead, South Winn hung around, out-scoring the Bulldogs 12-10 in the third quarter to trim the margin to single digits. Despite shooting just 29.2 percent from the field and making only 15 of 24 free throws, MFL MarMac pulled out a 48-36 win.

What helped the Bulldogs was their 5-8 night from three-point range, as well as a 35-21 rebounding advantage over the Warriors. They also snagged 14 steals.

Kacie Picha was a nearly perfect 3-4 from behind the arc, for nine of her 11 points, and had three assists, two rebounds and a steal. Ava Kishman earned a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, while Emma Driscoll contributed 10 points, five rebounds, two steals and an assist. Autumn Shaw netted six points, three rebounds and a steal off the bench.

MFL MarMac hasn’t beaten a non-conference opponent this season, and that trend continued Jan. 24, in a 47-31 loss at Waukon. The offense remained cold for the Bulldogs, whose field goal percentage dipped to 20.7. They connected on just two of 18 shots from behind the arc and five of nine free throws.

Shaw topped the stat sheet with eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Emme Wikner scored seven points, seven rebounds, four steals, an assist and the team’s lone block. Picha also contributed seven points, while Cora Keehner had five off the bench. Kishman led the Bulldogs with 10 rebounds.

Now 11-7 overall and 10-1 in conference play, MFL MarMac has two games on tap this week: versus Central on Jan. 28, then Postville Jan. 31. The team will wrap up regular season play the following week.
