The MFL MarMac boys basketball team picked up three more victories last week, improving to 12-2 overall and 10-1 in the Upper Iowa Conference.

The Bulldogs were up just one point through the first quarter of the Jan. 14 game at Turkey Valley, but went on a 22-5 run to lead 34-16 by halftime. Although the Trojans trimmed that advantage to 10 points by the start of the fourth quarter, MFL MarMac finished them off 68-47.

The team shot a combined 44.8 percent from the field and knocked down six three-pointers. Turkey Valley, meanwhile, made only 25 percent of field goals and was out-rebounded 39-27 by the Bulldogs and turned the ball over 15 times. MFL MarMac also blocked eight Trojan shots.

Landyn Miene accounted for five of those blocks and 18 points. His nine rebounds put him just shy of a double-double. Parker Kuehl also racked up 18 points, and added seven rebounds, five steals and four assists to his stat line.

Wesley Corlett chipped in 14 points off the bench—six of them from behind the arc—and totaled five rebounds, three blocks, two assists and a steal. Carter Lightfoot netted nine points and a team-high 10 assists, to go with five steals and a pair of rebounds.

MFL MarMac’s offense performed even better Jan. 17 versus Clayton Ridge, hitting 48.1 percent of shots and 11 from long range. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 16 times but limited the Eagles to 23.1 percent shooting and only nine second chance scoring opportunities. Clayton Ridge never scored more than 10 points in a quarter in the 70-34 MFL MarMac victory.

Kuehl landed 60 percent of his shot attempts, including four of nine three-pointers, for a team-high 24 points. He grabbed nine rebounds along with four steals and three assists. Brock Hackett was even more lethal from behind the arc, knocking down five threes for 15 of his 17 points. He also contributed seven rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Miene was 4-5 from the field, and finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Eli Hanson was the fourth Bulldog to reach double digits, with 10 points, and added seven rebounds, two assists and a steal.

MFL MarMac rounded out the week with a 75-65 win over Charles City in the Upper Iowa University Shootout on Jan. 18. The Comets clung to a 17-16 first quarter lead, and the squads entered halftime knotted 35-35, but the Bulldogs came out hot in the third quarter. A 25-16 run gave them a 60-51 advantage—one they held onto through the final period.

The Bulldogs hit another nine three-pointers in the victory, after shooting 45.5 percent overall. The defense kept the Comets off balance with 14 steals and five blocks.

Hackett had another outstanding offensive game, making four of five shots and two of three from behind the arc, for 17 points. Miene picked up 14 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, while Lightfoot had 14 points, a team-high seven steals, five assists and three rebounds. Kuehl’s stat line included 13 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals. Hanson joined the rest of the starting lineup in double-digit scoring, with 12 points, and added eight rebounds, an assist and a steal.

MFL MarMac’s next opponent is South Winneshiek, a team they needed overtime to beat earlier this season. The game is Jan. 21 in Monona. The Bulldogs will finish the week Jan. 24, at Waukon.
