The MFL MarMac girls basketball team is now 3-1 in the Upper Iowa Conference and 3-3 overall after splitting a pair of games last week.
The Bulldogs opened the week Dec. 9 with a tough 44-43 loss to Edgewood-Colesburg. They led 26-25 at halftime, but the Vikings pulled ahead 37-35 at the end of the third quarter and held the Bulldogs off down the stretch.
Ed-Co shot slightly lower from the field but knocked down six of 18 three-point attempts, while the Bulldogs made none of their eight shots from behind the arc. MFL MarMac grabbed significantly more rebounds, 41 versus 23, but committed 28 turnovers.
Emme Wikner led the team with 20 points, and added four steals, three rebounds and an assist. Autumn Shaw tallied seven points, eight rebounds and two steals, while Kacie Picha had six points, five rebounds, a pair of steals and an assist. Ava Kishman pulled down a team-high 12 rebounds to go with two points, three steals and two assists.
The following night at South Winneshiek, an MFL MarMac victory was never in question. The Bulldogs led 8-4 after the first quarter and never gave up more then four points in a period the rest of the game, winning 44-14.
The Warriors shot just 14.7 percent from the field —including one of 14 from long range—and turned the ball over 27 times. MFL MarMac, meanwhile, was 35.9 percent shooting from the field and limited its turnovers to 15.
Picha knocked down 10 points and had three steals, two assists and a rebound. Wikner also came away with 10 points and swiped two steals.
Sam Ruff and Cora Keehner were key contributors off the bench. Ruff chipped in five points and led the Bulldogs with eight rebounds, while also grabbing three steals. Keehner finished with six points and four rebounds.
MFL MarMac will play twice this week, at Central on Dec. 17 and at Postville on Dec. 20, before winter break begins.
