Serenus O. Eglseder

Serenus O. Eglseder, 93, of Garnavillo, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in Guttenberg.
Visitation and memorial services were Saturday, Nov. 2, at Morris Funeral Home in Garnavillo.
Burial was at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Garnavillo.
Serenus was born on Oct. 19, 1931, on the family farm west of Garnavillo, the son of Frank and Hilda (Schoulte) Eglseder. He married Emma Jean (Beckett) Portwine on Sept. 11, 1972.
Serenus spent many years farming with his younger brother, Francis. In those early days, they farmed with threshing machines and used horses to pull implements before moving on to the modern tractor. Serenus did custom windrowing oats for 45 years and was well known to many of the farmers in the area. Serenus suffered a corn drying accident while drying corn at the neighbors farm in 1971. This resulted in a metal plate in his forehead. By the grace of God, he went on to make a full recovery.
Serenus enjoyed fishing on the river with his brother, Francis. He loved his family and especially his grandkids. Serenus cherished the family holidays at Julia’s.
Serenus is survived by his son, Andy Eglseder of Luxemburg; stepchildren, Dan Portwine of Illinois, Julia Coughlin of Garnavillo, Steven (Lily) Portwine of Texas; grandchildren, Allison, Katherine, Abigail and Elijah Eglseder, and many step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Serenus was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Emma Jean; brother, Francis Eglseder; daughter-in-law, Theresa Miller Eglseder; and step-son, Jeff.
