Jane M. Thein

Jane M. Thein, 75, of Guttenberg passed away Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and Clinics.
Visitation was Sunday, Oct. 6, at Morris Funeral Home in Guttenberg and before services at the church.
Funeral services were Monday, Oct. 7, at United Methodist Church in Guttenberg
Burial was at Mount Harmony Cemetery near Garber.
Jane was born on Jan. 10, 1949, the daughter of Roy and Lola (O’Neal) Smith.
Janie loved her family dearly, as well as her many cats and dogs. She was referred to more than once as “the Crazy Cat Lady.” She is remembered by many as always happy and friendly, always having something to talk about. She enjoyed most spending time with her family. She also enjoyed gardening, spending time at her and Jimmy’s cabin, going to car shows, listening to live music, boating and volunteering at the Methodist Church in Guttenberg.
Jane worked at The Guttenberg Press nearly her whole adult life, beginning as a helper and retiring as the manager. She also held numerous part-time jobs, usually as a cashier or waitress.
Jane is survived by her sons, Troy Thein of Cedar Rapids, and Cory Thein of Dubuque; long time partner, James R. Hankes, Jr. “Jimmy”; one granddaughter, Peyton Thein; two step-children, Jennifer McIntosh and Jason (Shelly) Hankes. Her siblings were Allen Smith, Naida “Cookie” (Ronald) Combs, and Arlyss (Beuford) Barnhart. She had many nieces, nephews, step-grandchildren and friends. Janie married John “Jack” Thein, and they bore their sons, Cory and Troy, but later divorced. She and Jim were then partners for over 40 years.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Arlyss (Bueford) Barnhart.
