Wauzeka-Steuben Cross Country team starts off new season with a pair of invitational meets

Wauzeka-Steuben Cross Country began its 2024 season on Tuesday, September 3 by hosting their annual invitational meet at the Krachey-Hird Fields.

The Hornets finished second in the high school girls race with 41 points. Leading the Hornets individually was junior Isabella Bunders, who placed sixth in a time of 26:12. Following Bunders was first-year runner Alayna Martin in 7th place (26:24); sophomore Mallory McCullick, 8th place (28:03); junior Leah Peralta, 9th place (29:41); sophomore Ellah Jones, 11th place (31:01); junior  Emma Udelhoven (31:03) in 12th place and first-year runner Ali Jelinek in 13th place (31:34).

The Hornet boys also took finished in second place with 41 points.

Senior Brett Wagner finished runner-up in a time of 18:42 to pace Wauzeka-Steuben. Finishing in the fifth place was sophomore Nolan Reed-Mullikin (19:50), freshman Cody Wagner was ninth (21:21), freshman Josh Martin was 11th (22:15), senior Parker McCullick in 14th (23:49), junior Andrew Mezera, 16th (26:54) and freshman Stetson Zeeh in 18th (36:10).

The Hornets traveled down to the Darlington four days later to take part in the Darlington Invitational. The Hornet girls placed eighth as a team with 208 points. Bunders placed 21st in a time of 23:12 to pace Wauzeka.

A. Martin was 39th (25:40), Jones was 46th (26:15), Udelhoven was 49th (26:50), M. McCullick 53rd (27:16) and Peralta in 58th (27:53) to round out the meet for the W-S girls.

For the Hornet boys, it was once again Brett Wagner leading the way as he placed seventh in a time of 18:34.

The rest of the Hornet boys included Reed-Mullikin in 54th (20:50), Cody Wagner in 59th (21:01), J. Martin in 62nd (21:25), P. McCullick in 71st (21:58), Mezera in 95th (24:00) and Zeeh in 100th (32:29).

The Hornets placed 11th as a team with 253 points.

Following last night’s Ryan Zimpel Memorial Meet at Boscobel, the Hornets travel to Spring Green on Saturday to compete in the River Valley Invitational.
