MFL MarMac School Board approves policies to curb chronic absenteeism
By Audrey Posten
At its Aug. 12 meeting, the MFL MarMac School Board approved the second reading of a series of policies that address chronic absenteeism and truancy.
The policies, said superintendent Tim Dugger, help MFL MarMac implement new state legislation that’s meant to curb the issue. The board approved the first reading of the policies in July.
“I’ve heard a lot of different school districts are tackling this exact same issue,” he said. “This will be uniform across the state. Whether it’s good, bad or indifferent, that’s the way it is.”
Parents can expect to receive letters explaining MFL MarMac’s attendance policy. Administrators noted the policies are also listed in the handbook, which parents were required to sign off on this year.
Projects
progressing well
Principals updated the board on several projects ahead of the first day of school on Aug. 23. McGregor Center Principal Denise Mueller said work on the life skills room is complete, and Larry Meyer said science room updates would be done at the high school.
The press box project at the football field/track is also coming along well. School board member Aaron Schroeder said the contractor indicated it would be usable by the first home football game.
Staff additions
approved
The board approved contracts for Lisa Weigand as a paraprofessional, Adrian McGeough as an assistant high school football coach and Emily Palmersheim for food service. Dave Corlett was also approved as a volunteer middle school football coach.
